Volunteer Service in the Hospitals

By gypsy gal

Anyone aware of any social organizations/groups in Qatar , who work with the Cancer patients or children with special needs? I would like to spare some time during weekends with these people in the hospitals who need some physical or emotional support. If anyone involved in such services please give me the details.

Thanks

men are welcome too.

the reason we have not involved lots at this stage is becausee we want to first initiate this as a regular activity and not a time pass activity. ofcourse more people, the better.

this is a committment, so once we start we should not stop as we are dealing with lots of young emotions here.

so even in other meetings, if at least a few of us can make it, it will be a blessing. there is nothing wrong if members cant make it on the designated days when we plan due to work and other priorities becasue aisha from her side will always try to keep this acitivity alive.

i have to say this to aisha, that i feel, aisha being such a young person to be involved in such activites, well she is truly a beautiful person. i am happy to have met you and speaking to you everyday, my dear, insha'allah lets keep this freindship going. you have motivated me to do things i wouldnt do otherwise.subha'allah.

Ladies, It seems that it'll be next week inshaAllah.. I talked with Mona Almulla about it. They kind of anticipate our visit next week.

It'll be nice if we bought toys for the kids :-D Let's do this! ( Let’s talk about it..what do you have in mind? I’m thinking cars, bears and dolls..)

BTW, beside the volunteers, they NEED donors, I mean DONORS! Soooo we'll publish a report about this visit calling donors to donate to support the project because they'll turn the place to a school for these children. If we could give them a hand in this then: WOW! The report will be both a publicity for the place and a message for the potential donors.

We'll get a real reporter maybe..But we have to be many. Soooo ladies tell me what time do you prefer so we get to post a new post here to get more people to come along ( we'll ask Qatari to put the new post for us in the front page of the site )

I think this visit is better for ladies only. Girls are better with children. What do you think? I guess it’ll turn to be a majority-females gathering. Anyway, it’s ok either ways.

Aisha is arranging a visit to Qatar Center for speech and hearing. We are planning to visit them this Wednesday 6/2/07 or Thursday, 7/2/07 evening. Those who are interested please let us know. Right now it’s only me and Aisha.

han19 will you be able to make it? Charmed If you are interested you can also join us. Date and time can change according to everyone’s convenience.

Aisha will post more details.

Hi there!

I just heard about a wonderful private place called Qatar Center for speech and hearing. In Hilal area. Will check it out and tell you more about it.

It’s for children with disabilities (not necessarily in speech or hearing, could be in muscles or mental) sooo what they do is just playing with the kids and spending good time with them… plus some sort of a rehabilitation in basics like how to use a bathroom ..etc.

So it’s like an kindergarten but with special concerns and wise vision.

It’s coooooooool isn’t it! Especially for those who love the company of children..

I guess you have to speak Arabic, I’ll ask if there is a chance for you guys there.. I’m definitely in :-D inshaAllah.

So nice of you Aisha, I want to do exactly what your friend is doing. But I know language would be a problem. But I guess there will be few people who can understand English. will you ask your friend how to start this? I am more than happy to come with you during February, but as I am working full time so I cannot make it during week days.

han19, I understand your concern, but I am not doing it as I want to pass my free time. I am working full time. 6.30 am to 2.30 pm and I do have a lot of family commitments during weekends as well. Still I want to spare sometime for these people who need someone to talk to during their boring stay in the hospitals. I was involved in such activities back home. The feeling which we get out of it is something which is beyond words.

hey i agree about the old people liking visitors.

they need company, and they look forward to a short moment of happiness.

where in rumailah hospital is this, they have a geriatric ward, but where.the biggest problem is language.

A friend of mine goes to Al Rumailah hospital (the long term stay patients) every Friday just to visit them!. They LOVE her. They chat and laugh.. They expect her “short” visit every Friday.

Anyone of us can do the same thing.

Especially the very old patients, they like having visitors.. they like to talk about themselves.. :-D I like listening :-)

It’s really nice.

I'd go and ask the hospital itself.

IF I stayed in Qatar during the month of February I'll perhaps volunteer in a similar place.

I was thinking of Alrumailah hospital.. I’ve been there for a couple of times.. its great to be there.. I’m good at it and you seem so too :-)

If you are interested we can go to the same place in Feb or in the summer holiday :-)

Contact me if you're interested. I'll call you.

If you needed an Arab translator (when calling the places) You've got me :-D

Good luck!

places where you want to work with children, you may get some resistance becasue they are looking at the kids needs. they dont want the kids to make attachments with people who cant live upto the expectations unlike organisation who work on a schedule with them and for them. get my drift?

so if you can make a committment to this volunteer service then go for it, dont do it, because you are free, and you want to fill up your time by doing something thats good for your morale and looked upon nicely by everyone. pls dont take this wrong as criticism, i appreciate your gesture if you sincerely wish to do social work.

Thanks han19, I will check with the hospital. I tried to contact Qatar Red Crescent society I didn't a positive reply from them. Maybe they did not understand what exactly I am looking for.

i knew a person who used to do volunteer work in her free time.

you could appraoch the hospital itself and see how they respond because a few years back they were not that keen on such service. it may have changed now. meet the head nurse to get information first, she may direct you to the right person who can help. you could start with the 2nd floor of hamad hospital which is mainly for children and see what they say. they have 3 unit and the centre unit is for day admission only, you could check with the nurses there.

amal hospital is the cancer treatment hospital, so try meeting up with their warden or whatever else they are called and see how they respond to it.they may already have an organisation who do such service.

check red cross too.
