What bad habits have you picked up from living in qatar?

charmed
By charmed

I for one have picked up:

not packing my own shopping

not doing my own ironing

spending more time on internet at work

being more defensive

drinking more alcohol

eating more food

not indicating cos no one else does and it will confuse them

smoking more cos cigarettes are cheao

actually driving like an idiot if i resat my test i would fail

is anyone else finding this too, or is just living out here making me a bad person? Thinking about my Karma here.

As a Qatari myself

 not packing my own shopping

I pack if there is no one there or alot of groceries. Also give a riyal to the helper.

not doing my own ironing

I don't iron here unless I need something straight away

spending more time on internet at work

I couldn't even if I wanted to. Work blocks most of things.

being more defensive

I'm optimistic and calm I think. A good rant to a friend helps now and then.

drinking more alcohol

don't drink

eating more food

I think I eat about the same as I did when I was in the UK

not indicating cos no one else does and it will confuse them

Always 100% indicate. I'm trying to get people to get used to it and encourage them. If someone indicates I'll let them in front of me rather than someone trying to squeeze.

smoking more cos cigarettes are cheao

Don't smoke

actually driving like an idiot if i resat my test i would fail

When people swirve on veer, I never change my lane and honk my horn to get people used to following the lines. I try to encourage better driving.

Gym once every other day, football once a week, I should mention I smoke sheesha like once every two weeks.

@ellie, that's specific to the Gulf, not Qatar.

@muno, sometimes people get their bags taken out because they have no choice. The grocer quickly picks it up and we don't want to be rude and say no I'll take it, so we let them carry it and give them 5 riyals.

yeah, you are absolutely right, became more agressive 'coz of the many reasons and facts which are specific only for Qatar, lack of taxi when you really need it and most of the drivers dont know the local routes which makes me more crazy sometimes;

and many more - well, i would prefer to stop here in order not to get stressed again ;)lets hope for the better! thanks

I've discovered I have allowed myself to get criminally spoiled by the safe environment here... to the extent that I now take safety for granted and have become less vigilant even outside Qatar.

Not long ago during my vacation back home, I was in a bus and I spotted a friend at the far end... and I quite carelessly left my purse on the seat and walked all the way up to say hi... It was a small miracle that I actually found the purse and all its contents where I had left it, but then I guess the bus was not full enough to encourage any aspiring thief... anyway the stupidity of what I'd done hit me only after I came back to my seat.

Walking home alone after midnight is another example, I would never THINK of being afraid in Doha, but in my country being aware of danger is a healthy habit - one that I have to acquire again every time I go on leave.

hmmmmm i guess some of the above apply to me:

not packing my own shopping

spending more time on internet at work

driving everywhere instead of walking.

beside that I feel that living here made me much more introvert person....I guess

I tip people. Everywhere, all the time. It's a reflex.

Last time I was back home, I automatically tried to tip some people I met and they were almost insulted.

Maybe it is because I feel so guilty knowing I'm so lucky in life, and some other people are in lack of everything...?

I'll keep on the tipping as long as I am in Qatar, though.

alhamdullilah you girls are lucky...my hubby pushes the shopping cart to our car, i do the ironing and the house work too.but then its my choice so its cool.

yup there are a lot of positives for being here.we are blessed to have it alhamdullilah and we should just remember it.

fc1yrg, the ffc guys push the cart till your car if you let them to, and so do the cooperative society guys and you tip them.if you request them they do it for you...some do it out of duty. but if you fine doing it yourself...why not?

I so agree with all you said, yes the smoking too! They are so much cheaper here then they are in Canada! Easy to smoke more. Drinking a lot more wine. Now I plan my meals with what would go nice with my wine, ha!

I'm also empty nesting it for the first time so a lot more time on my hands that way.

Groceries, well I still carry them out myself! Haven't touched an iron in a year! Have not done any of the housework in forever, but hey, this is the plus side to living in Qatar!

how do you get people to take your groceries to the car? who ?and where? I must have been shopping in the wrong places....no one ever offered and I don't know you ask for that. I have always used the shopping trolley...

You know I have seen a lot of men here having their groceries taken out to the car. The problem is, it's like 3 bags. Guys, please don't pick up this bad habit! It's not appealing.

It's not only the men, it's women too. I mean really if it's not that much to carry, take it out yourself. I don't really notice the women too much anymore...I'm used to it.

The only time I have someone carry the groceries, is when I have my son with me. Oh and give the poor guy a tip!

My two nasty habits, that I pickup, since my arrival in Qatar is called: QATARLIVING .COM.

and working.

By shazbat• 19 Dec 2006 08:52

For me it's most of the above, including smoking far too much!

Considering a number of us in this post work full time, it seems we are also bored at work.

My boredom comes from frustration, at not being allowed to do what I'm capable off, in this particular companies culture.

What about the rest of you?

Well done,

Have you started making your husband drop you off in front of a shop as you couldnt possibly walk from the parking space to the main door yet?

Yep smoking more

Drinking more

Ironing whats that?

And my dogs do tend to chew more of my socks than normal (does that count?)

You're born, you take s**t. You get out in the world, you take more s**t. You climb a little higher, you take less s**t. Till one day you're up in the rarefied atmosphere and you've forgotten what s**t even looks like. Welcome to the layer cake son.

Oh my god, have mercy on QATAR! I'll take the pledge of silence on this one. I'm not ready yet, to execute my words of attrition.

I would say "being dependent on those who have a car to drop you the the places you need to get to".. no reliable public transport and waiting a taxi takes more time than the driving itself.

Except the smoking ... disgusting habit

I would also add driving everywhere instead of walking.
