Pet Stores and general question about transporting pets

Hello All,

First off, can someone tell me where I might get a pet carrier big enough for a little kitten who will be traveling home to the states with me for Christmas. Do pet stores exist in Doha?

Secondly, I'm sure many of you out there have traveled to Doha with your pets and I seek your advice. I will be flying with KLM and I have a choice between storing my kitten as Cargo or as he is so small (less than 4kg...which I think is about 9 pounds?) carrying him in the cabin with me. I'll talk to my vet but I'm curious if anyone of you have strong opinions over which method is better. Also, have any of you ever sedated your pets and can give some some advice regarding that.

Thank you!

They don't treat the animals they sell as pets but as merchandise. Their idea of hygiene is to splash Dettol solution on the floor and they are ignorant... in addition to being rip-off artists, especially Animal Kingdom on Al Murgab Street.

Hi,

You're best bet is to contact Qatar Pet Relocators who import and export animals all the time. They'll be able to help you get a carrier and will sort out all the paperwork for you. You can fill in an enquiry form on www.qatarpetrelocators.com and they'll get back to you and help you out!!

Sedation is really not recommended, especially not for kittens. QPR will help with any queries you have regarding all aspects of your pets travel!

Hope that helps!!

I ordered the carrier for my pet at PetsMart and had it shipped in via Aramex. It got here in just about two weeks. Pampered Pets Kennels outside of Doha used to see beds, etc, but I don't know if they still are. I've also done a lot of airline travel with animals. The question is is your kitty a crier? Mine is a screamer, so she travels via the baggage compartment. We always fly KLM to Europe or US with the animals. They treat them extremely well. Just see a vet within 30 days of travel to get all the paperwork done. It depends on where you are going what has to be done. Coming in, they had to have an exam within ten days of travel.

As I have not been here long I can't help with much in Doha, but the pet stores I have found were about the easiest of the stores to get to. I hope you and your cat have a safe trip. If you need help finding anything upon arrival feel free to send a message.

We brought our cat as carry on luggage, in a Sherpa case. He was fine - improved the flight as everyone loved him. Cruised through the transit too...

Suggestion: Take along a couple of disposable nappies for something absorbent to line the bottom of the case as he only made it to Amsterdam (on the way here) before a small accident. You can then dispose of the damp lining easily.

Hopefully your cat will not gain more weight before you travel because KLM's weight restriction for in-cabin pets is 9lb max. I am not 100% but this may also include carrier (probably want to verify).

I will be traveling with my "fat" cat (15 pounder) in-cabin in January and due to KLM's restriction, we changed our airline to Lufthansa--who will allow up to 17lbs in-cabin (including carrier).

Look forward to hearing of others experiences.

Regards,

Gina

Hi--I will be traveling with my cat on Lufthansa in two weeks. She has a reservation to be with us in the cabin from Houston-Frankfurt-Doha. I will try to get back on and let you know how it goes when we arrive.

I think the current advice is to NOT sedate your pet while traveling as you cannot be sure how they will react to it. I have traveled with my cat several times (always in the cabin, but only domestic so it's never been such a long trip) and she always seems to settle down once the engines are running on the plane (white noise & vibration, I guess). Each cat is different though so you may or may not have the same luck. There might be restrictions on letting a small cat like yours in the cargo area; I'm sure KLM has their rules online.

Do a search here on this forum and you'll find a few threads on pet stores in Doha (I can't help with this, obviously, as I am still in the US).

Good luck!

Becky
