Screw all that noise. I can teach you Arabic, one on lessons. QR-50/lesson only. I can give you an outline of what you can expect from the lessons.

I know some people who are taking Arabic at Berlitz and are quite happy.

I registered with QCPI few years back. It was free, i came there and paid my text book for 20 QR. Then i change my mind when i see the schedule of the class. It was something like 30 minutes the arabic class, then another 30 minutes about introduction to islam. I guess QCPI have a mission to introduce islam to people. Not that I am against Islam, but this kind of class wasn't my cup of tea. I guess nothing come free in this world :-)

Anyway ... anybody been to the arabic class with QCPI at present/recently? What is it like? Probably things are change by now.

Im arriving in Doha in the next few weeks and will also be looking into learning to speak Arabic....a little adult challenge me thinks! I look forward to it as there is nothing worse than a "new resident" who isnt prepared to ammend their ways to accomodate the new country they're living in. As they say "In ROme, do as the Romans do!"

Thanks for the info.

OK... maybe I missed the name change. Been here 19 years, and it used to be call the '....Propogation... etc. Much better with word 'Presentation'. Not so 'heavy'.

By the way I learned to read/write arabic in three months, so they aren't bad !!

from this link: Qatarhttp://www.qatar.cmu.edu/alhannah/index.php/Language_study

Center for the Presentation of Islam (QCPI, 486-4966) offers beginning spoken Arabic and written Arabic courses free of charge. They start in late September and run until mid December. Then begin again in February, and in April. They fill up quickly and you have to go to the center to register.

The Foreign Language Institute runs evening classes, and Virginia Commonwealth University occasionally runs 3 week evening courses (500QR, ~$140). Contact Mona Mohammed (mailto:[email protected]), 492-7238

Hope this helps :)

If it helps, it's the Qatar Center for the Presentation of Islam -- that sounds a little less threatening at least. :-)

And yes, they're groovy.

Qatar Institute for the Propogation of Islam or better known as QCPI has their building down in the Souk area... the circular zigurat thing. They are v. good, and you'll get a good basic arabic set of studies for free. They don't have any major teaching skills usually, but they are nice folks and if like me you're not Muslim, don't be put off by the threating sound of their title. They really are friendly, and the language lesson doesn't come with a pressured version of conversion. Its more to do with learning to speak and learning about the culture at the same time.

Usually they offer beginners/mid/advanced classes for language. And whilst I was at one of the later sessions not so long ago, they also offered Classical Arabic as opposed to Qatar Dialects.

Hope this helps.
