Finally, i have arrived!!!!

DEANO
By DEANO

Hello people.

I arrived in Doha last Thursday night & am into my third day at work.
All i can say is, so far so good!!

I firstly want to to say how friendly most people are here, to be honest i did not expext that.
So.........thank you.

Here are some personel observations i have taken in over the last 4 or 5 days:

Coming from the UK i did expect a lot of traffice, but not utter madness whilst driving, there doesn't seem to be any highway code at all, but i shall be joining you all tomorrow on the road, so look out for me ;-)

If you can't drive, almost forget it. Taxi can be ok, but don't expect one to turn up if you book it

The bus service is new & infrequent & i don't know where it goes.
So if you can't drive you may as well forget getting around unless it is very local trips.

The cornish is a nice place to relax & walk around.

The shopping malls are fantastic, many shops from Europe & USA, all the fast food you could ever wish for. Do not buy groceries from the Malls (at least the Landmark) because they are very expensive, go somewhere like the Family Food Centre, it is much cheaper.

Eating out seems to be fine, can't really comment as i have only been out a couple of times.

As for entertainment, not done much yet, but i get the feeling there isn't a lot to do if you are single, but i am looking forward to the Rave at Cloud Nyne?.

These are only personal opinions, & opinions gained from being here less than a week. I do expect to do & see much more & experience good things.

I am ver desperate to play football (soccer), does anyone wish to play somewhere sometime?

Also, as i live near the Sports roundabout/Regency hotel, can anyone reccomend anywhere good to go? Not got my car yet so it need to fairly local??

Any suggestions will be welcome,
Thanks,
Dean

Ok here is the location of the football field, it is located behind the Khalifa Tennis Centre and Qatar Sports club on AL Markhiya St just off the Corniche and not to far from City Centre.

There is the main soccer stadium there, and directly outside there are three or four soccer pitches with lighting every night.

Does everyone know this place?

My email is [email protected]

Hi all, sorry I have been away for a few days and am catching up on the responses.

Deano, I have heard that the rugby club are building a five a side football pitch and swimming pool sometime this year. Do you happen to work for QP at Education City, or which other office are you in?

I work for a company called KEO.

Ok lets organise a game at the field that I play on tuesday for next thursday night or friday, or saturday, which ever is best for everyone. Tomorrow i will post the directions when i get my map out, its pretty easy and I will give my yahoo email address so we can get confirmation on numbers. How does that sound?

AusM, i thought the club were building a small football pitch, for 5-a-side etc.........am i wrong?

They don't play league here. beggars can't be choosers. Oh and you can't use the ptich for roundball unless you pay lots of money

I'm sure that the Rugby Club will suit our needs - it will be a better use of their pitch than for the 'egg chasing' they use it for at the minute!

Just kidding Super, it's a good sport although I personally prefer to watch rugby league.

AusM - could you please give a few more specific directions, and a time, for the Friday kickaround you mention a way up the page? I know someone who is definitely interested... Many thanks.

No deano it is next to Doha college just off decoration roundabout. There is a game next friday (not this friday - away to Dubai Dragons ) against Kuwait. Kick off normally around 2. Come and watch and have a drink.

Best off phoning some of the guys on the website to confirm times and stuff. Bar is open every night though and training is on Sunday and Wednesday if you fancy a run. www.doharugbyfc.com

Ok guy's, it seems that next Friday (24th) will be better as some people are away this weekend.

Seeing as i am very new to Doha, i'm hoping that someone else can suggest a place to play on grass or indoors.

Ladies, you are welcome to join us.......don't wan't to considered sexist here.... :-)

P.S. Super7, where is the Rugby club? i wanted to come down for a drink & maybe join (not to play ruggers tho) Is it close to the Sports round a bout?

Pitches....ha ha ha ha. Astro or grass? Ha ha ha. You are most likely going to be playing in a central reservation for grass or else in the desert.

Sounds like you might have something going on when I get out there in a couple of weeks - what are the pitches like - are they mainly grass or astroturf - if they're grass I'll dust off my footy boots and bring them with me!!

Hi Everyone.

It seems to me that there is something happening this friday, from what I've been reading. I can confirm that I can have at least 2 other people with me who are interested and, quite possibly a few more. All I need to know is if we are going ahead and the exact directions to the place. We do have a car so we can get there no probs. Last time I said that, we ended up on the saudi border but I'm sure we'll find our way. My phone number is below. Please feel free to txt or call me and we can meet up on friday to play.

Looking forward to it. All the best.

I would love to join the fellas' in some soccer...er, I mean football??? :) But, I'm just an American sports lover that has played just about every sport except for soccer. Besides, I won't even be in Doha until April 16th.

If you guys are OK with a beginner soccer player that is a little more out of shape than he was a few years ago, but would still love to get out for some fun and excercise. Then I will look you up in a few weeks when I get settled.

I haven't said anything before this, as I figured you were looking for serious, experienced players. But.. you asked for it :) Let me know and as I said, I'll look you up in a few weeks.

See you soon!

Dean,

Would love to go along and watch the match but may be a bit of a problem as I am still in England until 31st. Comiserations on being a Palace supporter by the way.

I am squeezing as much life as I can out of 'live' footy in England and am going to Manchester City on Tuesday to see if the mighty Villa can progress to the next round of the cup.

Let me know how the footy game went - I will definitely be well up for that as soon as I get out there!!

Good call guys. As i'm not at all familiar with the roads, can someone meet me somewhere, like the Sports roundabout?

I'm happy to drive & even take people, but getting there alone just now might be tricky.

AusM & branstonpickle, i hope to go to the Rugby club Monday evening, as they are showning a live game (Stoke v Crystal Palace). Crystal Palace are team i support, so i MUST go. Maybe you want to come along & we can swap telephone numbers & emails?

If not, if you want to give your number on here, no problem.

Hey All,

I moved over from Australia 6 weeks ago, and also enjoying it here. Deano I have Flying Onyx, i have found a place where you can play football, down on west bay there is a soccer pitch beside the stadium there where there is plenty of fields to play. I have started playing with a group there and we have a good kick around. Your welcome to come join along, well everyone is.

Branstopickle, there is one thing you should know about Qatar, its that they love there football especially the enlgish premiership, you wont find it hard to find a place that is showing it. You can also get sattelite connected at your place and can receive it at home. Also, there is a european club which i go to, to watch the football as it gets a good crowd in and they have a number of big screens in the place showing different games.

Hi Deano

Welcome to Doha. I came over from London and just entered my fifth week here. I pretty much have the same impressions as you. It's not a bad place.

I have been asking around my office (Qatar Airways) about anyone playing football and so far had no joy. I would like to play for fun and am in no way competetive but it would be nice to play some, especially before the summer weather kicks in.

In terms of going out, Rydges seems to be a good place to go, especially at the weekends. Beer seems to be expensive but never tasted better :-) Have not had a chance to explore Doha yet. There is also supposed to be a desert party this Friday, apparently very famous but dunno where exactly. (Somewhere in the desert I guess judging by the title)

Please let me know about footy developments as i would love to join you guys and might even be able to get a few people from here at QA.

Best of luck in settling in.

Hi Avid user,

I don't work in TV, in fact i work at the Qatar Foundation in Procurement. Good luck in your post by the way!!!

Safwany, Dentist, & Branstonpickle, that makes four of us who wants to play. What a fantastic idea about having a Qatarliving team......if anyone else is interested please let me know.

I shall try & update my impressions over the next few weeks & let you decide if i am being postive or negative, remember these are only my thoughts.

As for going out, i like to go clubbing, the occasional drink, watching & playing sports etc, but as i say until i get used to driving i don't want to venture too far just yet.

Thanks Qatari about the donuts, i love them & chocolate, but i had better join a gym before i start meeting for donuts :-)

Hi Dean,

Thanks for the post, most interesting and useful - I move out at the end of March and it's good to hear what other peoples initial experiences are. Am well up for the footy idea when I get out there -I will be watching the Chelsea - Barca game tonight in England and would be interested to hear what coverage of the Premiership is like over there (if there is any at all?)

Cheers,

It seems you have a good observation eyes, it is nice to hear more about the things you notice around.

What kind of places you want to go so we can recommend something?
