Argentina’s first ambassador to Qatar Rosana Surbulle arrives in Doha today to head the country’s mission in Qatar.

She will also participate in an ‘Argentinean Meat Week’ event, a senior Argentinean embassy official said yesterday.

“We value our relations with Qatar and we are sure that the co-operation between two countries will be further strengthened when our first ambassador joins us here,” Charge d’Affaires of Argentina’s embassy Claudia Alejandra Zampieri said at a press event to announce the ‘Argentinean Meat Week’.

She hoped that economic ties would improve further. It is in this context of ‘food diplomacy’ that the Argentinean embassy is organising a week-long ‘Argentinean Meat Week’ from September 17 in collaboration with the Sheraton Doha.

“The goal of the Meat Week is to introduce the high-quality and world-renowned Argentinean meat to the people here,” she said.

She added that there are economic objectives as well and she hoped that the trade relations between the two countries get a boost.

The Argentinean community in Qatar is small in size compared with other expat communities present here.

The charge d’affaires estimated that the number of Argentinians must be between 100 and 150, many of whom are employed in the airline industry as pilots or flight attendants, teachers and doctors.

Sheraton’s assistant Sales and Marketing Manager Sara Chakri said: “We are going to be the first hotel in Doha to serve Argentinean meat at our Latino restaurant and we have ensured that the meat served is halal.”

The price of the meal will be per gram with a minimum of 180grams per cut.

Diners will be able to choose the type of meat cut they want before the chef cooks the meal for them.

The Meat Week is expected to also feature Argentinean tunes and a raffle draw.

“The Argentinean Meat Week is part of our hotel’s efforts to introduce food from Latin America to the people here.

Last time we had the Peruvian festival that remained fully booked throughout and next month we are planning to hold a similar Spanish food week,” Chakri added.
