Qatar's new Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani addressed the nation on live television today evening for the first time since becoming ruler of Qatar, saying: "We will diversify sources of income in Qatar."

Despite implying that there will not be a major policy change, the new 33-year-old Emir stressed that the country will continue moving towards development.

"We will continue to invest in education and health but we will be more tough on the results," he said, after deeply thanking his father, former-Emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani for his efforts in reforming the country.

"He [previous Emir] has a special place in our hearts," said Sheikh Tamim.

The new Emir also voiced Qatar's dedication to the GCC and the Arab world, claiming that "Qatar is committed to Arab issues and to solidarity with the Palestinian people."

Yesterday, June 25, former-Emir Sheikh Hamad gave a speech in which he abdicated power in favor of his son, Sheikh Tamim. The former-Emir indicated that the change of power comes with a need for "young leadership," hence the shuffle in Cabinet positions.

Sheikh Tamim reiterated this message today, saying: "Qatar is putting across two messages: one of new, modern leadership, but also one of continuity."

Ideally if Qatar can change the following for expats , it would be good :-

.1. Firstly change the workvisa system like UAE , so that professionals change their jobs after 2 years with a company , with ease .

.2. Secondly ease the family visa rules and make the rules like UAE -simple and smooth , no 6 months bank statements , no waiting rules .

It's already been implied that there will not be a major change in policy. So don't expect it. But I believe it's not a factor to push Qatar backward.
