Crimes comitted in the name of the Empire
The British government is negotiating payments to thousands of Kenyans who were detained and severely mistreated during the 1950s Mau Mau insurgency in what would be the first compensation settlement resulting from official crimes
In a development that could pave the way for many other claims from around the world, government lawyers embarked upon the historic talks after suffering a series of defeats in their attempts to prevent elderly survivors of the prison camps from seeking redress through the British courts.
In the case of the Mau Mau conflict, the secret papers showed that senior colonial officials authorised appalling abuses of inmates held at the prison camps established during the bloody conflict, and that ministers and officials in London were aware of a brutal detention regime in which men and women were tortured and killed.
The FCO knows that compensation payments to Mau Mau veterans are likely to trigger claims from other former colonies.
well, can the Brits ask to their bridges, roads, administration etc back?
To the victor the spoils...
History says they were not gifts but stolen from all around the empire
Brit...true...but I have seen a few people on QL asking for it to be given back...so I was wondering if there was any success...;)
i doubt if Ghandiji spectacles were gifted :o(
One does not return gifts - Its deemed rude..
NM that worries me more they might give n take :/
Are they giving Koh i Noor back?
did they stop the looting ?
Looks like the crime of their forefathers is finally catching up with them. Its so disgusting and disgraceful how the British abused, brutalized and looted innocent people and whole countries in the name of the empire in Africa and around the world
So nothing has changed much.... It still goes on..
I don't think they should be compensated ..
