Looking to adopt a pup

I'm looking to adopt a pup of preferably a good breed. Tried a lot of pet adoption centres but they have only salukis and I'm not interested in this breed as I've had terrible experiences before. Plus, I felt (from their attitiude) they are not willing to give good pups to Indians (I'm an Indian). Could someone please tell me where I can find good bred pups/dogs for adoption?
