Moving issues...

Hello all,

Like many of you had already had the pleasure, I'll be moving to Doha in the next month and as a single 27 year old female I'm already expecting severe issues... I've lived in Dubai previously but am moving from NY and doing it via the distance is obviously proving quite difficult and stressful in addition to noticing the limited amount of single bedrooms available. I would be immensely appreciative if anyone would be able to point me in the right direction of how to begin this search (useful websites, people, etc..). As a recent (masters) graduate, I'm still on a limited budget though starting with a pretty great company, so I'm not able to stay in a hotel intially as I don't know how long to expect to be without housing. I'm presuming that about $1,000 per month is very reasonable for a room rental? I'd obviously prefer a 1br apt./studio but understand I have to be flexible upon arrival. Thanks so much for any advice!

Nope male visitors are not illegal. And again, yes it's mostly a practice that is never enforced unless someone complains to the police on you.

Thanks so much everyone - I wish it was as easy as using Craigslist in the US. But I guess that's the price you pay for year-long sunshine :) I'm wondering though about this shared living thing - I totally understand that mixed is illegal, but having lived and traveled pretty extensively throughout the region, I would very much want friends to be able to visit, male and female. Is having male visitors illegal as well or is it only when they're residing with you? Though I understand certain things can be stated on paper as illegal, though in practice, never really enforced. A bit confused...help! :)

1000$ a month would be roughly Qr 3,700 . You should be able to find a sharing accommodation in a two bedroom apartment with one room for yourself. The single room bedroom apartments are not that easy to find and the good ones are generally above your price range.

It's not going to be very easy as a single female to find the accommodation in advance.( Bachelor ratio is highly imbalanced with regards to men and women, and mixed accommodation is illegal.) Try your luck with some of the classifieds in QL or post one yourself.

Also most companies tend to provide hotel accommodation at least the first 10 days or so. Try to negotiate with your company about it. Good luck.

I'm surprised your company hasn't arranged housing for you. If you have the option it might be better to see what your employer has available. There really isn't time and patience enough in this world to go through finding and setting up an apartment in Doha.

$1000 a month for room rental, you gotta be joking. Try closer to $2000 for a decent apartment and if you want to live in West Bay the uptown part of Doha try $4000. Its not as cheap as Dubai here.

It will not be difficult as the rents are gradually going down , it will be easy from the classifieds of the local Newspapers, and also you can ask them for the location you prefer ,maybe closer to your work location.

GOOD LUCK

check the classifieds (gulftimes.com)

and you should have someone here to arrange the deal or even check the room/apartment.
