Moving in Aug and need to know many things!

This is my first time living overseas by myself so I am full of questions. I have been told that I can find everything I need in Qatar. Is this true? I am used to living places where I need to bring all the toiletries I will need for the year with me.

I dress pretty conservatively but my dresses do stop at the knee and some are sleeveless do I need to buy new clothes?

Can you use skype in Qatar?

Can I bring my dog?

I guess I will leave it at this. Any advice you have will be much appreciated.
Thank you!

No that's not true we are not looking at the lady that wearing short and attractive clothes as prostitute. We respect any culture and understand what they are wearing, so its not big deal.

I agree with Mandilur - should have elaborated more in my last paragraph above.

Some airlines won't take a pet during the summer month unless you use a pet relocator. The reason for this is that a reputable relocator has a network of other pet relocators to handle any emergencies. For example, should your flight have an unexpected overnight stay in Dubai the pet relocator can immediately arrange for a Dubai-based relocator to care for your pet until the flight is ready to depart for its original location.

Definitely worth checking into, but generally speaking there is no need for a relocator. We moved our dog from Australia to the U.S. without using a relocator as well.

Some airlines embargo pets when the temperature at the airports involved is over a certain maximum so August may be a problem. Ask the relocator.

We brought our dog over from the U.S. in early October and it was very simple. Pet permit aside, we did not use a pet relocator and it saved us a heap of money. I think we paid ~US$250 for the United & QA flights (total); our dog was checked a accompanied baggage rather than cargo - no difference in where they stay on the plane, but a huge difference in price.

Coming in August, though, there might be some benefits to using a pet relocator. . .worth looking into.

I, too, will be in Doha in August! Guess we will all figure it out together. I don't think clothing will be too much of a problem...there are great stores in Doha. Biggest thing for me is natural cosmetics like Dr. Hauschka and Seventh Generation natrual laundry detergent - all of these I will be bringing with me!

If you want Qatari people to respect you,you have to respect what you wear when you are out.

We(Qataris) look at any woman wearing very short or attarctive cloths as prostitute.

Happy Memorial Day!

We too will be arriving this summer, though my husband has been in country for several months now.

I have been told that if you can wear it in an American office, you can wear it in Qatar. It's short-short and extra tight that seem to be offensive, so if your dress is moderate by American standards, you should have no problem.

Yes, you can Skype! Thank heavens for Skype! We use it daily.

As far as toiletries go, I have been told that if it's a "gotta have it" by brand, bring it, because even if Qatar has it, they don't always have it all the time. If you don't care about brand & any dab'll do ya, don't worry, they've got it!

Although I understand that one CAN bring animals into the country, we are leaving ours with trusted family and friends. My dog is older and I’m not sure she’d make the trip well.

Hope that helps some! You are brave to be doing this on your own – I’m fairly overwhelmed, and I’ve got a husband & a corporate team behind me.

Good luck to you!

Try doing a preliminary search on specific items, like dogs, feminine hygiene, etc. Often these questions have been asked before (and these two in particular in the last 48 hours). If you want some answers about dogs, I'd be happy to help. Send me a PM.

BTW - if that is your picture as avatar - you will have literally dozens (if not hundreds) of men offering to be your friend here in QL. Better not to use it if it really is yours.

qatar.doha: You shouldn't tell people about Enrique and Akon - you will scare them from coming here. ;-)

Yes, you can bring your dog, I brought two over and adopted a 3rd since I arrived. There are several companies that can assist you (you can just google 'qatar pet relocation') or you can do the paperwork yourself. If you want to do it yourself you are better off coming first, doing the paperwork, and then having someone send it to you.

nope you can't bring your dog with you...if you want to bring a dog then its a long procedure...and as sheena said there is no problem with sleeveless but people will try to talk while you walk alone in a shopping mall or on the road..so simply ignore them..you will find good friends here and there are loads of people from USA here..skype can be used here..not a big issue...and you find everything here ...

Well,

regarding ur questions... u dont have to worry abt things like toiletries.... we get a variety of things here.

Ur dresses seem to be fine, Sleevless is not an issue... U must keep one thing in mind.. no matter what u wear, people will always stare at u and try to talk to u if ur walking alone on the streets.

U will find it odd at first but im sure u will learn to ignore it!

We have shopping malls here with some amazing brands!! We have cinema's here, ice skating, Bowling, Saloons. There is everything in Doha! Recently we had Enrique Iglesius and Akon in doha too.......LOL!

NOt too much of hustle!
