Medical Care in Doha

Hello All

This is my first post on this forum as I prepare to emigrate to Doha. The first (of many) questions is about medical care in Doha. Can I register at a doctor (G.P) for free or will I need medical insurance. I don't think the company I will work for provide the latter.

Also are hospitals of a high standard (comparable to Europe and Australia)?

Thanks in advance

I was enquiring about few specilised medical problems and after few months of meeting many docs. in Doha still did not find a real good doc. or a reasonable treatment for a close associate.

For your information. the doctors I met in Hamad and Rumailah hospitals themselves told me aboout the medical status in Doha.

And what is medical needs to do with Americans (appologies to US citizens) being treated in Hamad Hospital. Do they have any other option in Qatar.

Medical care is quite safe here in Doha. Unlike what skdkak said, its not just common cold and stuff alone that are treated here. There are close to a million people here who are treated in Hamad. Also HMC is JCI accredited and my personal experience here has been good. I have seen many europeans and americans getting treatment here, Most of teh docs are trained in good centres around the world.

You could always have a second opinion though from a doc you know or from UK. By the way I know how the NHS works, Doha is far better.

Medical care could be good in Doha (dont know much)..

I am sure about one thing.. any special medical needs are pathetic here.. For a general cold / fever / cough etc - no prob..

I u have any specific specilised medical needs, do conform prior to coming here.

Excuse my ignorance, but is Hamad Hospital the main hospital in Doha?

I worked as a senior nurse in the uk for many years. I assure you that the medical care here is FAR superior in almost every way. The only down side is the experience of outpatients visits, it is confusing beyond belief until you are used to the system. I have spent 3 days as an inpatient here and was astounded by the medical care, nursing care (and I mean old fashioned care) with highly skilled nurses, and the place is cleaner than the NHS has been for years. This is, of course only my opinion and experience but I have experienced both first hand. JJ
