Getting discouraged

Hello all ...

The more I read on here about everything going on in Qatar -the school waiting list and how insanely expensive everything is I'm getting very discouraged about relocating. Even with all I'm reading how Qatar is so family oriented ... seems like it's just too expensive for families to live there ... maybe I'm just misunderstanding and wrong. I sure hope so! grrrrgggh!

@dohabunny - I suppose this amount for groceries is for one adult a month?

Should I add 350QR for the internet?

Now this is the answer I was looking for, straight and clear. Thanks!

@ marycatherine Thank you Miss, I appreciate ur help.

As I said before, we are really living a 'Quiet Life', so no alcohol, no every day restaurants, no expensive and exotic food...

We are considering to pay up to 45000QR per kid for one year, including everything school related: fees, transport, books, uniforms, lockers, after-school activities...

So far, 3 schools are at the top of our list, considering the price and location: Doha College, Doha Montessori British School and Park House School. Any experiences with these?

I spend around QAR1800 for a family of 4 but with two small kids under 5. We are not vegetarians, we do buy branded food like Kelloggs instead of generic and the groceries I mentioned are just for food costs for home cooked food. Our staple is rice.

Hope that helps with your groceries' estimation.

Yes re the internet, especially if you want a decent speed for downloading or uploading. Please err on the high side for your budget (as per Mary Catherine's post on expenses) because monthly expenses seem to go up quite a bit every year.

School fees do not include a lot of the extras, like uniforms, shoes, any out of class activities, transportation, etc. Schooling only gets more expensive as the child progresses through the grades. Internet and phone probably about 200 min/month depending on bandwidth and usage.

If you like a drink now and again, that's expensive too - the 5* hotels are about 40 - 50QR per beer more expensive per glass of wine. You can get a license with your employer's OK for a refundable deposit of QR1000. Case of 24 beer about QR150 on average.

As for cheap international schools, you get what you pay for. And anyone can call themselves an international school, that doesn't mean they have qualified or competent teachers or they may not follow a curriculum that will be what you want for your children.

So erring on the low side, schooling will be a minimum of 5000QR each month, transportation for school about 3000 each month other school expenses say 500/month. So for the children alone for school and related expenses maybe 8500QR.

Food for 5 people - probably closer to 2000/month not including any treats at restaurants.

Petrol - erring on the high side 500/month

You get vacation tickets, how about where you will vacation? Hotels/meals etc can add up quickly for a family.

Clothing for you and your spouse - any incidentals - kitchen appliances etc that may not be provided by the employer, household cleaners/detergents/toilet paper/etc., etc.

It all adds up. For the last paragraph, do a quick calculation of what these things cost you monthly at home, then double it for a conservative estimate of what it might cost you here.

Ur really proving urself to be 'surrounded by urself' spybot. I wonder what caused ur current state of mind. Hopefully it's not the Qatar's heat...

Yes I AM from former Yugoslavia, but since none of my two native countries are listed at the forum settings, I am actually from Yugoslavia. I don't see anything funny about that. Now tell me what this got to do with my question?

I suppose ur born in New Zealand knowing all about living in Qatar? Having any right to have ur opinion on who should and who shouldn't come to Qatar after a few years spent there? Think again, please.

Utilities - QAR500-700 (depends on season & usage)

Groceries - QAR800-1800 (depends on whether you are vegetarian or not & the brands you buy)

TV - around QAR300 a month (I think cheapest OSN package)

Car fuel - very cheap compared to USA, QAR200-300 should do it for internal Doha travel unless you get a gas guzzler and have lots of daily long trips around Qatar.

School fees - as per LostInQatar's post above.

Clothing and entertainment - Free charity bin & free walks in parks to Dynasty-like prices in Doha.

You do the math for your lifestyle.

OK spybot I stopped reading your so called posts some time ago since ur not trying to help anyone but ur ego. The statement 'I'm surrounded by idiots' only is giving a pretty good picture about ur personality. I'm quite surprised that admins tolerate this level of conversation on this forum.

Anyway, about my package, I guess I should repeat what I was offered.

My wife and I have a sum of $6000 a month, approx. 21-22k QR. We have fully furnished apartment for free, payed power and water bills, local daily transport of our choice (I suppose company car or money, about 1000QR a month each), health insurance and free plain tickets for our vacation.

The expenses left to be payed are: food, clothing, internet and phone bills, fuel and any kind of leisure activities.

We are planning to buy a car for 2kQR a month which is covered by the company.

We arrive to Doha without the children in order to check out the expenses and all before we choose the school for them. I know there's a possibility for company sponsorship of children education, but that's something I cannot count on in advance.

So there is still space to choose a cheaper school but we have to start somewhere.

lol spybot calm down. Bobb Spy is right i really dont see how a family of 5 can survive here with about Qr.11K.

The accommodation that you are getting from the company is it fully furnished? If not you will have to spend on furniture.

How do you plan to go around town..taxi? They cost you anywhere between 10 to 50 riyals. Plan to buy a car? Most banks ask for min salary of 10k and then monthly installments could be around 1500 to 2500 riyals for a decent sized car to take your family of 5 around.

Internet, telephone expenses, fuel expenses...and groceries per month could come up to another 3 to 4k riyals min, so out of all this whats your savings?

Lets not forget the other stuff like entertainment, books, clothing etc etc etc.

You might want to rethink your offer and try and get double of what they are offering you now. Oh and by the looks of it your company isnt sponsoring your kids education, try and see if they can it will be a great burden off your shoulders.

lol LebaneseCndn I'll be making 4 times more than my current income in my home country, but I'm afraid that's not what is relevant. It's salary/expenses ratio that counts.

There's no saving plan for now, first I wanna see if it's possible to live with this amount of money in the first place. We have free plane tickets for our vacation once a year, so at least this is partly covered...

Bobpenn- I don't think 11,000 QAR is enough for a family of 5 even with a 'modest' lifestyle (IMO). Expenses do add up quickly as you are aware. You should not relocate unless you will be making 1.5- 2x more than your current income. Keep in mind when you want to travel back home for your yearly vacation or other destination - you need spending money. Also, how much do you plan on saving? Good luck with whatever decision you choose!

lol I thought this might be the problem. Please pay attention on details, spybot. :))

So, to make things easier, I'll rephrase the question:

Will QAR 11,000 per month be enough for an average 5 members family for food, clothes and leisure?

Between 15 000 upto 60 000 qatar riyals per year, not US dollars.

17k USD for one kid a year at the cheapest? Are u absolutely sure about this? From what I've found so far, there are some cheap international schools for at least half of that price, but I'm aiming for something 'in between' about $12k annual per kid. Am I missing something big here?

By spybot• 21 Jan 2013 15:23

BobbPenn ...well u gonna have less than a modest life if tht is ur salary and u have to pay for ur childrens school....u can pay anything form 17k to 47k p/a p/child..

Hmmm, my wife and I are planning to move to Doha, both will be working for USD 3000 each, plus free family accommodation, transport and medical insurance.

I know our biggest issue will be the tuition fees for our three kids (twins are 11, one girl is 4).

We are planning to spend at least half of our wages for kid's education, so will 3K USD be enough for all other expenses, considering we are pretty much used to the quite modest family life.

Thanks everyone!

I can't blame you, with explosive growth, poor infrastructure and high cost of living its not everyone's dream destination
