Fake agent rental fees

saltbrush
By saltbrush

We found a rental house through a QL ad from an agent. We called the agent and he transferred us to another person to see the house. We met the owner, rented the house, and the owner paid the agent fee. The guy who showed us the house tried to get us to also pay an agent fee, and even came to our house to intimidate us to collect. We had to threaten him to call the police and report him to his employer.

Warning, do not let these guys threaten you. Call the owner and tell him you are being harassed, and he will put a stop to them.

I hope business is good for you and if, as you mention, the villas are of a high standard, we would be pleased to work with you in leasing them, for an agents commission of course...!!

Please contact me if you are interested in working together with a reputable agent.

Kind regards

Craig at Mirage

I've been reading this post for quiet sometime now, and I gota say that this is madness! I don't believe in giving commission to a uncertified agen. I am leasing out luxury villas in compounds, and I won't even take a dime from the client as a commission, because it happened that we are the owners. Call me up for more details.

I am MD of Mirage Properties, a legitimate and well established Real Estate agency here in Qatar.

Firstly, let me say that I have no issue with legitimate agents charging a reasonable commission for a job well done,as long as they disclose at the outset they will charge and the client is happy to pay.

We at Mirage made a choice not to charge our residential customers any fees as we are paid by the landlords, however we do charge our commercial clients. Most other agencies, whether legitimate or not, chose to go down the route of charging 'admin fees', 'finders fees' or 'completion fees', just another way of saying commission. If they gave good service and you agreed to it then no problem, however, if they gave you no service at all or you're unhappy with what they did for you then don't pay.

The best suggestion I can make is ASK..! Are they registered as a real estate agent? Do they charge commission or a fee of any kind? Depending on their answers you make an informed choice, to stay or walk away and find another registered agent.

I hear too many horror stories of customers being threatened or hounded by disreputable individuals, claiming to be real estate agents, who made no mention of any kind of commission until the deal was done, usually with very little input from the so called 'agent'!

We trade in a largely unregulated business so beware..!

Regards

Craig at Mirage

When I was looking for a new accommodation, I encountered such agents and I said...oh hell NO!

I got a place thru QL adverts WITHOUT the "sharks"...thanks GOD :)

He should NOT have paid the agent.

What did the agent do? Find the house, thats all. AND if the agent wanted the money, he wouldn't have handed over the Landlords details to complete the deal, he had to do the work for his money.

As someone else said above, they are all sharks. They know nothing about the industry, but want to profit from it.

If an agent does the following:

1) Find ths accomodation

2) Follows through with the lessor

3) Follows through with the lessee

4) Does the contract and explains it

5) Does the hand over of the accomodation.

If you read carefully, it was stated by the OP, the Landlord paid the fee. If he didn't do point 1 - 5 of the above, why is he getting the fee anyway?

You do NOT pay ONE AGENT TWO FEES - its either the Tennant or the Landlord who will pay!!!

give legit real estate agents agents the bad name.

I work for a real estate company and we get our fee ffrom the landlord/owner because we advertise and get them tenants. We don't charge the tenants.

Hahaha, plenty of rental agents queuing in QL to support the rental agents.

Rental commission is to be discussed and agreed in advance and they should not threaten you to pay that if nothing is agreed.

you did a good thing ..if everyone does the same what you did, then all the villa/flat owners would show up and rent their property without any commision

you did the good thing, why you should pay the agent or the person who advertise? the agent will be paid by the owner. don't give them chance any time. they are blood consuming people!!!

Oh my...please people, use reputable agents...the VAST majority of people who advertise on QL are NOT agents linked with agencies! They are in for a quick buck only! They will screw you....

The government announced a new law 9 months ago but never followed through on it! Stay with either agents recommended to you or registered companies.

Saltbreak,

I listen to you and others, and what i say to it is if he needs to take commission, he needs to provide his CR Number, a legal Qatari law to conduct business. These agents work like a mafia, with no insight on how the brokerage and tenancy contract take place. You will be suprised that some of them asking contract and none other than the watchmen of an empty apartment. The issue is legal way of asking commision then they must i repeat must have a agent CR number, and not any grocery CR number

Real estate agents are not regulated out here - most do collect Commission on showing you a property.

well, did he mention anything about his commision before sending u to the owner?

to my knowledge commission is legal, and he may call the police to collect it.

if the agent in QL directed you to the Landlord and had an advanced agreement with you to pay him the commission then it does not matter if the landlord paid or no, YOU still need to pay him his fees that if you have agreement before showing,

thanks
