I have read a lot of comments from this website and kind of lost. my partner just got a job offer in Doha for about QR 47,000.00 per month plus medical, car and air ticket allowances. we have not accept the offer yet as we try to work out whether it is enough for us to live there comfortably and make some savings. if this is the case, we will make the move, otherwise we are better stay where we are now. can anyone give me some rough ideas. what is the average cost of living in Qatar. we have read through others post and comments on this site for quite a while, but did not get any conclusion. some comments are positive for us but some not. we do not have children. we have quite good life now and wondering is it worth to do it now. all comments are welcome and appreciated

all your comments are very helpful, we understand the accomodation will take the major part of our cost in Qatar, but how about other expenses, such as utilities, food etc. are they quite expensive. also is it worth to take our furniture with us as the transport cost will be covered by the company or just rent a fully furnished place. is there a big difference on rental price between furnished and unfurnished. as in the contract the exchage rate is fixed, we hope this is good for us but do not have any ideas. we have a marriage certificate, it should be good enought to allow us stay together in Qatar and we don't have kids, so there are no extra education or other costs involved. the accomodation allowance already covered in the package and believe me we are trying our very bests to negotiate more money. who knows, hopefully we will get something before we make the move. as we both love and enjoy travels and different cultures, we should be able to survive there in a good way.........

It sounds pretty good to me. In general i was going to say if you cost around QR55K/m to your employer (including everything), airtickets, car and medical, you could live a pretty decent life in Doha.

But first things first; you cannot live with a partner, you must be married. If you're not married, that could be a problem with local laws.

But if you are married, and both of you work, that becomes even better of course. In general also, your tax free income in Doha should be equal or a bit more than your home base gross income(before taxes).

One important thing to consider; if your contract provide correction for exchange rate fluctuation. Due to the sinking Dollar, and the pegged QR, not too many people are currently arriving here from the west.

Hi lxh, glad you found the right place to post ;-)

QR 47,000 is a very good salary. We are from the UK and are on a package in the same sort of ball park, though we also have accommodation provided by the company (as you've probably gathered already rents are pretty high here. Think QR 10,000 to QR 16,000 for a good standard apartment). We live pretty well here and have plenty left over to save. Obviously whether you could do the same would depend on how extravagant a lifestyle you live at home!

I'm sure you already have, but you also have to consider the sacrifices you'll make, such as leaving friends and family behind, moving somewhere that doesn't have as much going on (assuming you're coming from a city).
