Expectations in Doha... The Return
Hello, I asked this question below a couple of hours ago, firstly thank you all for your answer but i have one more question: Why did you link the "enjoy my life" part to my nationality? By the way, I am french...
"Does this job seem interesting for you for a single person?
- Salary : 9000 QAR
- Accomodation provided
- Car provided
Can I enjoy my life in Doha? In terms of:
- Travelling
- Sports
- Anything interesting to do in Doha...
Thanks for your answer(s)"
I think you guys meant that Europeans have greater expectations but I was actually asking if this offer is sufficient to live with a European standard of living (I think yes according to your answers) but also is that sufficient to discover and enjoy the "Qatari nightlife or daylife", and not just work, eat and sleep but also hang out, travel around ME...
Thanks again for your answer...
Should I be saying this?... I heard from a little bird that those who love their wines and beer (esp. from Europe) ought to have a few with them (maybe sufficient for personal consumption), pack them securely and load them into cargo on trips over.
/Well, hey.. they only have restrictions for the hand luggage on flights (which means we cannot carry any more wine by hand) but can pack 'em all into cargo.
//Err.. some people got away with it. It's allowed, no? And in case anyone's wondering - there's no wine or beer in my apartment here, so I'm not the one to ship 'em into Qatar. (I shipped them to Malaysia :0)
European standard of living - from my European friends, they say the cost of living at their home is very high so they don't go out much, forced to cook (even the guys) to survive and do a lot of DIY stuff around their homes - to save costs. Their only binges are wine and beer.
Save for the last bit, I guess you can survive on QR9k, since your accommodation (which is the major expense) and car (including petrol bills and maintenance - also a killer in terms of burning a huge hole in your pocket) are taken care of.
I used to survive on QR700 but now average QR1 - 1.5k and occasional roaming trips.
If you are a regular pub crawler, then that might bust your budget.
As for "discovering and enjoy the "Qatari nightlife or daylife" - QL and the Natural History Group have very interesting activities and members and trips are organized by volunteers, costs are kept to a minimum.
"Travel around ME" - agree with Mandi - the costs of flying around ain't cheap. I haven't started flying around yet, so I can't tell.. yet.
By the way, I also agree with Mandi that for a professional's pay, that salary you quoted is rather low, unless you're a fresh grad or you're quoting basic salary only and not inclusive of allowances.
Please don't enlighten us on the details because that's confidential information between you and your company. I trust you are aware that this is an open (ie public, not private) forum and bosses and HR depts would understandably be rather pissed at indiscretions.
It is low for a professional salary. You said you like sports and travel. A gym membership could cost you 750 QR/mo. And remember that to travel anywhere in the Middle East will cost you an airfare of 1-2K QR (then add on hotels, etc., very expensive in this past of the world.) Take a look at Gypsy's post on all the bars/hotels/nightlife. I found the costs quite appalling. You could easily spend 500QR for a typical night's entertainment.
It will be enough until n unless u dont party or hang out much..Qatar's living standard is bit high..So do enjoy but in limits as one needs to save money for their future too..right?? As far as i think, its a good package..Try to negotiate more but not in such a way that u may end up spoiling the whole matter..Just ask if they can give more KK to u..ALL THE BEST...
I dont think so that you can enjoy a lot with 9K as things got much expensive here too. If you can bargain with them to raise few more KKK's then it will be cool.
With 9K in your pocket you can just have a simple eat, sleep and work kind of life style with little bit on weekends only.
Good Luck.
Peace
