2006 Asian Games Doha
HEY BRANSTONPICKLE - i read you were looking for a job at the Asian Games in an old forum - have you secured one?
I am just interested to ask some questions as I am pretty sure I will be there very soon. Have just had my interview and they have recommended me for a position - just waiting to hear.
Let me know
Cheers
S
I think you will find that the figure quoted is all inclusive
Jane,
Drop me an e-mail to [email protected] and I'll forward some of the stuff I've had from DAGOC concerning your questions.
Andy
Thanks for the clarification Andy...none of my currency conversions were working! The tax free aspect is attractive. Like the UK, in Canada we pay more personal income tax than in the US, but then we have "free" healthcare. Speaking of which, are there any medical/dental benefits offered? I've checked past postings to try to determine if Games employees are being offered employment packages that include benefits that others are receiving relating to accommodation, transportation, etc....
BTW--any progress on securing accommodation?
I was quoting US $ on an annual basis ($50,000 - $59,000 tax free).
Andy
Andy--it's amazing the process is so simple...excuse my ignorance but what currency is the salary range you quoted? I'm assuming it is monthly? (we refer to annual salary in Canada). Hope the preparations for your move to Doha are going well. Thanks as always for your helpful advice.
MJM
MJM,
I had 1 40 minute interview, and supplied no references or referees. I have no previous Games experience, but a good background in other areas.
I was advised that salaries ranged from $50-$59000 - I would suggest you ask for the maximum!
Hope this helps.

Re: Games interview process...if I’ve tracked the posts correctly, it would appear that in most cases, those people who have secured positions did so on the basis of a 45-60 minute telephone interview....??? Did you have to provide references and/or reference letters? Did they check with past employers? Does everyone have Olympic or Commonwealth Games experience or are they also accepting related experience?
I noticed on the jobs page on the Doha Games site they are now stating that candidates must have a strong background in the “reporting language. What does that mean? They are also asking for salary expectations....any suggestions for a range based on the going rate?
Just trying to get some more background before tailoring my application.
Thanks for your assistance.
MJM
The working week is Sunday to Thursday with DAGOC. But don't expect to work a standard day ....or week.
From what I have heard and from the sounds of those jobs listed on CLR (assuming I was looking at the right ones), the CLR jobs are/were the higher level ones which were filled a long time ago (the people that I have met who are working as "Head of...." and "Program Manager of..." have been here for a year or so), whereas most of the jobs currently being advertised (on the Games website) are at Coordinator or Team Leader level - which I believe are lower positions. I wouldn't expect the current positions to get much over the minimum you mentioned of 2,500 pounds (/month), perhaps? But that is a bit of a guess...
Speaking of salaries....
The CLR Global website lists monthly salaries for Games positions ranging from 2,500 - 8,000 (Pound Sterling) with the average around 5,000....For those of you who have secured positions or are currently negotiating salaries, are these salaries in line with your experience?
BTW--Mark, I read somewhere that the work week starts on Sunday.
I never even looked at the CLR Global website - I don't think I even spoke to anyone at CLR and maybe had two or three e-mails from them before representatives from DAGOC got in touch with me and progressed the application.
Good Luck!
Checked out the CLR Global website...
The job vacancies they have listed for the Asian Games expired at the end of 2004 (and don't match up to those currently listed on the Games site) so I'm not sure if they are actively recruiting for any upcoming positions--does anyone have any insights? I do plan to apply directly on the Games site, but want to make sure I have all the bases covered. Some times if you bypass the recruitment agency you can negotiate a higher salary as they employer wouldn't have to pay the commission.
The official website for the asian games has postings listed on that, it may be better than going through a recruitment agency.
My two cents for today :)
Shay
Congratulations! It sounds like things are moving along quite well for you. I fly out from the US on 14 April and my start date is 16 April.
They asked that my start date be on a Sunday. They will probably ask for you to do the same. Maybe you and I will go through "orientation" at the same time.
Let me know. Maybe we can stay in touch as our arrivals grow nearer.
Mark
Hey Guys, I heard from HR today - and they are sending the contract through this week...so all looks good....just finalising the process now for the Village Operations Centre Coordinator position.
I have asked to start on the 14th - which I hope happens cause at least that gives me a 2 week break to rent my house out after the Commonwealth Games....look forward to seeing you soon !!!
Hi Carol,
Daniel Morris was my main contact initially. He approached me in October/November last year and said he would get an interview set up. He then got in touch again in December and said that the people doing the interviews were away at another event and it would have to wait until mid January. I then heard from someone at DAGOC in late January and set up a time for a phone interview - hey presto, 3 days later I got a job offer! My best advice is to keep hounding Daniel via e-mail and the phone as that's what I did and it worked. All in all, my process was surprisingly easy - I've never been offered a job on the basis of a 45 minute telecon before!
All the best,
Andy
Hello Branstonpickle (Andy)
I am curious as to who you were in contact with at CLR Global as I too was approached somtime ago but have applied on line after some hold up with them. My contact was Daniel Morris.I worked on the Manchester Commonwealth Games back in 2002 and want to work in Protocol for the Asian Games.
Regards
Carol

Yes Shay is my real name!!! I will email you to chat more about the games...sorry to hear about your girlfriend :(
Speak soon

Hi Jane - I think you should definatley apply online - the recruitment process is strange to say the least - and they are employing lots of people at the moment....I also sent resumes through my contacts at the Games in Melbourne - which definately helped - but you should apply online so it can go through their system
Cheers Shay
Hi Pharkus/Mark
Thanks for your post - its so exciting reading about the Games!! If my position is secured they want me there on the 7th of April - which is a bit of a stretch for me - because my contract finishes with the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games on the 31st of March...and I live in Western Australia - so want to go home and rent my house out prior to flying to Doha - but I am flexible and want to go - so will work around that.
I will let you know as soon as I know if the position is confirmed....they said I will know by Tuesday.....if i dont get it there are 7 other jobs I have applied for that they are then ready to interview me for!!! So it all looks good.
Keep in touch
Shay
Vancouver 2010 Games jobs can be found at: http://vancouver2010.com/en/Participation/JobOpportunities
I would surmise that at this juncture, unless you have very specialized, senior-level Games-related experience, preference will be given to Canadians, especially since they've been swamped with people applying from across Canada. More than 30,000 ppl signed up as volunteers before the bid was won.
I just recently started monitoring the Doha recruitment site and will certainly apply for those jobs for which I am qualified...I was just hoping for a bit of a leg up. Do you know what the salary range is?
Thanks Andy--I hope you are enjoying Doha!
Jane
Hi Jane,
I was approached by an England based consultancy named CLR Global who put me forward for the position. Try this link for the DAGOC web site recruitment section.

Do you have any info about recruitment for the Vancouver games, or is it too early yet?
Good luck!
Andy
I am also interested in securing a position at the Asian Games so the comments posted here have been very helpful. I currently live in Vancouver, the host city for the 2010 Olympic & Paralympic Games and am hoping to get some Games experience to increase my chances of working at the Vancouver Games and to overcome the fact that I am not fluently bilingual (French/English), a requirement in my area of expertise (communications). I have media relations experience at various World Cups as well as PGA golf...also some experience in sponsorship, protocol, television and events. For those of you who already have jobs, did you apply for a specific posting or would you advise sending in your resume to HR and/or the department head for the area in which you are interested in working? Any other hints?
Appreciate the advice!
Jane
You guys will be ok in Doha, there are a lot of people working here for the Asian Games at the moment. Almost every second person you meet is working for the Games, im the other whos not :) You will also find there are a lot from the Greece Olympics here too.
Andy
Sorry to hear about your girlfriend.
We live in Orange County (Anaheim, Huntington Beach). Let me know if you have any questions about the area. I was born and raised in Orange County. I'll be glad to offer any input if you'd like.
Mark
Hi Mark,
Sounds like you're going for it big style - good luck to you! I ended up finishing with my girlfriend of 3 years over my move to Doha! Whereabouts from CA are you - I was/am looking for a move out there as I love the place - I'll have to see what happens after the Games.
Andy
Shay/BP
I read your posts about the Asian Games and thought I'd share with you as well.
I recently secured an offer with DAGOC as a Venue Logistics Coordinator (also a Level 6 position???). I just received final documents last night including my flight information and visa documentation.
I am getting married April 2 and I am scheduled to start work on april 16. So, things are moving quite fast for me right now. Thankfully, my fiance is very supportive and we are both extremely excited for the move.
BP - it sounds as if your process was quite a bit smoother than mine. My first phone interview was January 3. I was contacted nearly two weeks later for a second interview with HR. I did not receive an official offer until February 13. Here we are in March and I have just received confirmation of my travels. But, none the less I am heading over and couldn't be happier about it.
I worked the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City in 2002 and I am looking forward to meeting new people and forming new relationships with co-workers just as I did in Salt Lake. It would be great to hook up with people before we arrive, that way there will be some familiar "faces" in the beginning.
Shay - It sounds like you'll be in Doha quite soon as well. Do you have any indication of when?
As I mentioned, my first day is April 16. So, I'll be right behind you BP.
By the way...my new wife and I will be heading over from the US (California).
See you soon!
Mark
Hi Shay,
Cool name by the way, is it your real one or just a nickname for this? (My name isn't really Branstonpickle in case you were wondering!)
I fly out to Doha on the 31st March to start as a Venue Transport Coordinator, which is a grade 6 role, whatever that means. There is no finish date on my contract, just the standard 1 months notice from either side.
I am staying in touch with someone from the UK who went out in Feb who answered all the same sort of questions for me that you are now asking! She found accomodation privately as the DAGOC flats don't appear to be that interesting and you apparently don't get a choice of who you share with. As there are so many Westerners going at the minute, it seems that groups are being formed pretty quickly and these groups are finding villas with pools etc. This is what I hope to do when I get out there as I am getting put up by DAGOC for the first fortnight (I think all new DAGOC staff get this).
As far as the recruitment went, I had one telephone interview in late Feb, a verbal offer 3 days later and a written offer a week later. I officially accepted the offer on the 1st March, so it will be exactly one month between accepting and starting work - not bad considering the amount of people they are taking on. They have booked me a flight and are in the process of sorting my visa out at the minute.
I'm really looking forward to it, and virtually all the comments I've heard from DAGOC staff out there have been positive.
I'm glad to hear there will be a few Aussies out there, as I've always got on well with them when I lived in Shepherds Bush!
If you want any more info, drop me an e-mail on [email protected]
Cheers,
Andy
BP - what is your role? are you still in the UK at the moment? Do you have a start and finish date on your contract? Have you secured accommodation yet? I know they were mentioning something about DAGOC housing??? Do you know much about that?
So many questions I know!! I am working at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia at present and they are contracting alot of people from here for the Asian Games...but all of us have had different experiences with the recruitment process.
S
Shay,
Yes, I am going out there on the 31st to work for DAGOC. Ask away with the questions, although I doubt I'll have many answers!
