Tips to maintain your car during summer

Summer is upon us in Qatar and that means it's time to see if your car is ready for the high temperatures as this can be tough on a vehicle - everything from the paint down to the tires is subjected to harsher than normal conditions.

Some of the problems could leave you stranded in the scorching heat. Here are a few pointers to help make sure you and your vehicle are ready for Qatar's summer.

1. Engine coolant, motor oil, and windshield washer fluid are some things you can regularly check on your own.

Engine coolant is the most important thing motorists should stay on top of in the summer months, it helps maintain your car's engine temperature. Checking or adding coolant is easy - the coolant reservoir is located under the hood. Make sure the coolant level is between the minimum and maximum levels.

2. Tire pressure is also important, especially during summer.

As the outside temperature increases, the air in your car's tires expand. Make sure you check your tire pressure when the tires are at a normal temperature - before you set out on a road trip. Tires that are over or underinflated can reduce the vehicle's handling or generate excessive amounts of heat that could result in a blowout.

3. Changing your engine oil and filter is very important.

Summer is a good time to keep up periodic maintenance like oil and filter changes and inspection or replacement of the air cleaner and fuel filters. Regular maintenance will improve the durability of your engine in the long term and increase fuel economy in the short term.

4. You cannot survive Qatar's heat without a proper air-conditioner.

If your car's a/c is not getting cold, chances are you have a leak in the system. Get it checked by a mechanic. If you see a little water dripping from your car, don't worry, the a/c system drains condensation when it's working properly.

5. Keep your car clean during the summer.

Washing your car once a week is a good practice in this season. However, washing too often is not recommended as it could wear off your car paint.
