Tonnes of School Olympics fun!

Hello people,
I visited the Aspire Academy for the final of the Schools Olympic Day programme. Should say that the whole Aspire dome is a beehive of activity. There are finals for school children for basketball, handball, football, volleyball, fencing, swimming and other sports. The boys competitions are happening today while the girls competition will be tomorrow, from morning 9.
I think it's a great place to be in today evening, where there will be a giant closing ceremony and all that. Just am posting a few pictures for your viewing pleasure. Try and be there today evening, it'll be loads of fun for the whole family...

...for thinking and saying in this forum that parents were out in their hundreds to cheer their children on yesterday evening.

I had wrong information. There was a humongous crowd indeed, but they had come to watch the live performance of a famous Jordanian band 'Toyour Al Janah'.

The crowd response was so massive that the auditorium filled up an hour before the programme started. The organisers closed the gates and there were unruly scenes outside ASPIRE. Something I thought i'd never see in Qatar.

Well, the programme was a huge hit and it's prompted the Qatar Olympic Committee to promise people another show soon. here's the link...

But seriously, getting such a huge crowd for ANY event in Qatar is a huge achievement. Go Qatar, let the crowd roll in!

Good work...Qatar...

Two things I would like to highlight is

1. The facilities will remain closed to the people of Qatar until next year School Olympics time.

2. There was hardly any publicity for the event .....they should have had advts like they gave on the day of the events.....for the event to have audiences.

Nobody announces "Olympics" the day it is held!!!

There was also a poll held on the website about the event's "success"....before it was held....and pointed out by me ....the thing was quite vague

Also on the site only 5 people had voted !!!! Talk about awareness....inspite of it being mentioned on QL...

Where here is my previous post:

And was there any live telecast on TV by Al Jazeera....or do they only do Bin Laden tapes?

Looks like a remarkable facility, a great idea to develop young talent.

I am coming out to work as PE Teacher at Al Khor in August, so it's an area of interest.

Do schools use the facilities available?

Is it mainly for Qatari nationals, or international children?

Thanks for any info. Can't wait to get out there!

I see in todays newspaper there was an article inviting spectators.

"Deaths in the Bible. God - 2,270,365

not including the victims of Noah's flood, Sodom and Gomorrah, or the

many plagues, famines, fiery serpents, etc because no specific numbers

were given. Satan - 10."

How i wish i had a camera with me now... I'm at the venue and you wouldn't believe what you're seeing...

I havent seen so much crowd in all my years in Doha. Hopefully, Wanderer will upload some more pictures of the event. I'm hoping she will. This is a sight to behold. And i guess every child DID bring an adult with him/her.

I was not being negative about the event - far from it - if every other child brought one spectator then one would see a crowd of 600; look at photos 1 & 3 that show the paltry crowd comprised of other competitors and officials.

I was making the point that the event and the children deserve the support of their parents.

What hope for international events when the competitors own families can't be bothered to turn up?

Pray why are you so negative about the whole thing? The ASPIRE Academy holds more than 15,000 sectators. There is no chance that it's gonna fill up (especially as there are only about 1200 children taking aprt and even if they brought 4 people with them it would still mean just 5000 people).

What if the photographer had took the picture from above where the people were sitting so that he got only the OTHER side of the stadium with much less people? Does that sound logical? Maybe it is.

I appreciate the initiative by the Qatar Olympic Committee. They're going the right way in attracting youngsters into sports. You'd have to have been there to believe it. The programme was superb.

And i really dont understand the rationale between finding faults with everything this country does. Hey, you're living here, man. Make the best of it. That's all I've got to say.

I was there, I saw what they did and it was impressive. Well, I leave it to your judgement.

nice venues, but you would have thought the parents would come to support their kids!? where is are the spectators?

Shame, it's always the same.
