Ramadan runaway maids

Ramadan continues to be a tough month for domestic helpers in Qatar, with the MOI reporting a rise in runaway maids due to an overload of work.

Yes Shak, there are maids that do that for money or thinking their sponsor will marry them. Just because there are prostitutes in the bars in Qatar it doesn't negate rape crimes in society.

There are maids who love to even sleep with the sponsor. Can we talk on that and come out of rape.

If you can wait a while I'll call all of them and find out... Back soon.

If yes, then tell me how many cases of physical abuse and rape of filipino maids are there out of over 100.000 Filipino maids in Qatar?

By anonymous• 11 Aug 2012 00:58

The Filipino embassy here has to deal with many cases of physical abuse and rape of Filipino maids by their sponsors. Some are lucky enough to run away to the embassy. However the interesting thing is the Filipino Embassy is not interested in helping these women push criminal cases in Qatar, all they care about is getting money from the sponsor so they can send them home.

the affected parties who are either close friends, relatives or neighbors, and not Qlers who just spread rumors and copy paste stories from net or some other sources.. In short, I trust my relatives and friends more than you and QL..

Instead of copying and pasting stories from internet and spreading rumors, get mixed with your Qatari and Arab neighbors, get close to them and only then you can decide whom to believe; the original source of the news or the manipulated information from blogs and unofficial internet sources.

By the way, I see that you only copied my statement ""And by the way, I do not blindly believe in any news from any source unless I see it or experience it myself." and you ignored my last statement "I do believe that there are maids who are mistreated and abused by a minority of people, but I would never consider this as a major problem that happens to more than 50% of the maids in Qatar" Why is that? You simply pick what you like and can serve you and you ignore what you don't like and might contradict with your personal opinion.

"And by the way, I do not blindly believe in any news from any source unless I see it or experience it myself." I will give you some concrete and definite examples that can translate my statement to you. Just few days ago, one of my ex-classmates in the University was showing me text messages and a video of himself and one housemaid. When I asked him where was that video taken?, he answered " in her house". Other guys working in a barber shop told me stories of thier relationship with housemaids, and they showed me videos of other housemaids. They even sometimes asked me to reply to the housemaids' messages because they do not speak proper English..

I myself received some phone calls from ladies who do not speak proper Arabic or English..They were laughing and asking me where I am from and if I can send them hala cards. I asked them what do they work and they said that they work in a house..I do not know if they were just dialing miscellaneous numbers, or one of my contacts have given them my number, or if they got it from one of my advertisements in QL

Regarding the abuse of children. My 6 years nephew was telling me that the housemaid hits him. When I asked him why you don't tell dad or mom, he answered: " they won't believe me".

All my 3 sisters, older brother, and my mother have housemaids and I never witnessed any mistreatment or abuse. Instead, I saw them happily playing with kids and I saw my sisters taking them and entertaining them in malls and shopping centers.

Now whom shall I believe? You with your opinion that does have any concrete proof and only based on internet sources, or my family members and friends with definite proofs?

So you believe those stories but not this one?

"And by the way, I do not blindly believe in any news from any ... source unless I see it or experience it myself."

While the stories about maids abusing children or bringing men home may also be true - does that make it OK to overwork/underfeed, abuse maids in general? By bringing up the former, does that negate the latter?

By anonymous• 10 Aug 2012 09:15

and we cant blame them from refusing their circumstances

maids to go dating and bringing men to their landlord's house an abuse? I personally heard more stories about maids bringing men to their landlord's house, or sexually harassing the kids. I won't share these stories here in QL as the ones here who keep commenting on how badly the majority of maids are abused in Qatar.

I did not say that such things do not happen. I said that as per my experience in the last 32 years living in Qatar, I have not met any family abusing and mistreating their maids. I only hear few stories from you guys here in QL and some media channels.

I do believe that there are maids who are mistreated and abused by a minority of people, but I would never consider this as a major problem that happens to more than 50% of the maids in Qatar.

By marycatherine• 10 Aug 2012 02:25

And I suppose rape, child abuse, sexual harrassment, discrimination based on faith, sex, religion, etc. etc. etc. don't happen because I've never experienced these personally either? Get real.

I am curious (and going slightly off topic), since the international Human Rights organisations have written their report about HR the labour "atrocities" in Qatar .... You don't believe that many maids don't get abused?

Or do you believe that housemaids are treated better than labourers in camps?

By anonymous• 8 Aug 2012 11:36
anonymous

Is it really important to keep housemaids. And even if you keep, bring here and torture them for days and days without food and water.

Have good heart for every human being. This is what every religion teaches.

By anonymous• 8 Aug 2012 10:19
anonymous

I like that bit. If you give them shelter you wil get fined and may end up in prison. These are not escaped prisoners who have committed dangerous crimes. Such treatment of fellow humans is inexcusable.

source unless I see it or experience it myself. If I am new in the country, and my father who lives here for decades will tell me that, let’s say, Qataris are like this and that, I won't blindly believe him and follow his advise unless I experience what he is talking about in the real world.. So those who tell thier personal opinion and say that abusing and mistreating housemaids is a major and serious problem in Qatar won't affect my own and others’ opinion. It might only affect a minority of people who are naive, negative in nature, and who always follow the wind where it goes.

It will only waste their time repeating themselves and will let them feel better than others (psychology)

By Tarsiers• 8 Aug 2012 05:36
Tarsiers

MOI article was not about EXCESSIVE abuse of housemaids in the country. It did not say anywhere that abuse and mistreatment of housemaids is a major problem in the country. It only highlighted the increase of housemaids RUNNING AWAY in Ramadan (because of over loaded work) and reminded people that anyone who would give them shelter will pay fines and might end in prison.

On the other hand, some people here in this forum and elsewhere keep repeating the same topic about a major trend of abusing and mistreating housemaids in the country.

Aren't they bored of repeating themselves? Or they are only negative people in nature and enjoy accusing others and pointing on others' mistakes in order to feel better:)

By Xena• 8 Aug 2012 00:42

its rather odd that you see it as a minor problem....

especially since MOI have given a report on the matter...

But you must know better, right?

try to be a housemaid sometime and dont let them know who really you are. and after this let see your experience by that i should say its just a misunderstanding between the two. i read this about one pinay seeking help for his boss is maltreating her and the worst part is she became a s6x slave. idk more much about the story but more or less im still counting on you TARsier.

Bad week for qataris. Attacking a doctor at Hamad, two dead in a road accident that also lead to a death of an Indonesian, gun shots in muither and house maids running away from abuse.

It's lucky we live in the safest country in the world or else I would be getting really worried now

about mistreating housemaids! I personally never met any housemaid who is unhappy or mistreated. All my 3 sisters have housemaids, my eldest brother have one and my mother too. I see them happy and enjoy playing with children and roaming around with the family..

The way people keep addressing the issue of mistreating housemaids in Qatar makes it as if it is a major problem in the country, while I see it very minor one and I bet on that this issue happens all over the globe.

Meanwhile, it is good to address this issue sometimes, but not repeating it in different forums every month to give a bad image of the country and its people..

Same same. No one really cares for these people, not their masters here or the embassies of the countries they come from. Just commodities to be traded for the benefit of others.

I believed its not just an work overload there must be some reasons behind it as clearly written in the news.

Yes right, its not new.

Respective embassies should do something about it to protect their citizens.
