Capital punishment kills a man at once, but lifelong imprisonment kills him slowly. Which executioner is the more humane, he who kills in a few minutes or he who drags the life in the course of many years?"
Life imprisoment for serious crimes is the only option. I would tend to agree for the worst crimes that the death penalty should be applied but I have one problem with that. No justice system in the world is 100% accurate. So you kill someone for a crime and then find out that person was innocent later, how do you bring them back to life?
When the proofs are confirmed about his crimes, without delay the authorities should punish with consider the two things:
For the victim:
The victim, should be convinced himself that the judgement we got for our loss happened becuase of this criminal and
For the society,
The Authority think about to proct the society from such crimes in future by giving a suitable punishement for that criminal.
So if victim lost his eye, the criminal should also become eyeless. this will make the victim to be satisfied and will not plan for involve any "tit-for-tat".
For the society if the criminal wiht "eyeless" comes in the society people will think about him and they will be aware by carefull with that criminal and also they also will not do involve themeself in the same criminal.

Alhamdullilah alls well. Jazakhallah khair for inquiring. Barakhallah feek!
It all depends on the crime, the physical and mental state of the accused & of course the legal system of the land.
