Hey Guys.... I m kind of stuck... Actually the problem is that i had been offered a job for the role of Architect in one the prestigious multinational design firm in their Qatar office. My current employer is paying me reasonably gud, The new job offer is slightly low than my current package, and i have asked for a 15 percent raise than my current package. They seems alil reluctant. Any tips or advice to proceed and to convince them.

It looks like they want to take advantage of your eagerness to work for a consulting firm.Working with a contractor, you have skills that a consulting architect may not have ie practical experience of building things and knowledge in fine details of construction. So you can bring to table skills other architects may not have. Remember in any negotiation, the power is with the person who is not afraid to walk away.I wish you best of luck!

Just be honest and say you will not change for a lower salary..if they wanna hire you, they will contact you with a better offer. It doesn't make sense to go down by 15% just to work for a consultant. It's always your worth that matters in the job market.

Contracting companies will always land in trouble. Gene_lv is right but, architects will not hold long in such companies, the right place are architectural firms, consultants & designers. You can be here comfortably for another 10yrs and accordingly you have to decide about your carrier. If you can compromise 15% go ahead or stay back and hold yourselves; see if they will call you. To me 7yrs is a respectful experience but it does not give one enough maturity.

Qatar, just like any countries in the Gulf or the Middle East is to me, not the place to build a career because, sooner or later, a local will be taking our job and/or someone with a lower salary will be replacing us.

Hence, money is the only motivating factor for a career change. For you to gain better experience, you should be at the contractor side because, a consulting job is not challenging at all. It's a job for lazy person (no offense meant and my point of view).

Take care.

Thanx... Well i m a not a very senior Architect.. I m holding 7 years experience with 2 years in Qatar... My only reason to move is that i want to work with a Consultant, i m currently working with a contractor... yeah u r right 15% is really not a very huge raise numerically but its gud enough to cut my food, fuel and mobile expense. They are offering me 15% low than my current, it kind of offends me and hard to convince my self foe lower rate only because its a gud firm. I think they are trying to cash their name.

What are your reasons for the move?15% does not seem a lot unless you are drawing a high salary. My guess is that the new company is in two minds about hiring you.Unless the new job gives you some fantastic experience(relevant only if you are a young architect),walk away from their offer. They may contact you again in future.
