Qatar Symphony at The Ritz Carlton Hotel Doha
I had the chance to witness the first symphonic composition written to tell the story about the state of Qatar. I bought my ticket few weeks back … the shows are on the 1st and 2nd of June, I chose the first day.

Arrived at the Ritz Carlton Hotel about 9.10pm, show started at 9.30pm. Parked my car and walked to the hotel main entrance only being told the hotel staffs that I have to go to another entrance from the back of the hotel. It was quite long walk. The walk way lead me to the pool area of the hotel, then indoor pool, then straight to the indoor tennis court which had been transformed into an indoor theatre.
Show started on time … however a lot of people still keep pouring in even after 15 mins… they came late!!! When the show started … the audiences who arrived on time, and were already seated, were being asked to move forward. I think they moved me to the front side of the QR250 seating area. When the show finished I had a look at the back, and the place was packed!!!
The performance divided by 4 pieces : The First Movement – The Beginning, The Second Movement – The Dream, The Third Movement – The Challenge and Achievement, The Fourth Movement – Forward. I quite really like it … first time listening to the orchestra with the Arabic folklore melodies in it (in this case Qatar folkloric). It is different and a change from listening to Mozart symphony. This was more my 'cup of tea' after the last musical venue I visited :-)
As a result of the very enthusiastic response from the audience … the orchestra performed an encore. There was no explanation what the encore performance was, but I think it was Qatar National Anthem. I don’t listen to it that much … but I do think I still recognize the tune.
The symphony is sponsored by Qatar Petroleum as the platinum sponsor, Qatar Fuel Company (Woqod) as the golden sponsor and Qatar Navigation Company as the bronze sponsor.
I left the hotel just after 11pm … really enjoyed the performance and looking forward the next one as usual.

Novita,
Unfortunately yes, I'm still offshore, and I missed many other things as well, I had to stay offshore longer than ever before this time.
Thanks again.
:D
Novita, I went last night and it was a lovely evening! Started off with dinner at Porcini (at the Ritz), one of my fav restaurants in town. :-)
Last night they started at 9:45. Trying to wait for latecomers, I guess. But people were STILL coming in 15-20 minutes after it started. In my experience, it's considered rude to come in during a live performance, and in fact, people are usually made to wait until there's some kind of break (in this case, between movements). I had an aisle seat and I found the latecomers' clomping up the stairs very distracting.
Also, about 30 minutes into the performance, about 12 or so people (not together, but from throughout the theater), all Qatari, mostly young men but also some women, got up and LEFT. What's up with that???? This is also considered rude... to the audience, the musicians, and the conductor. If you absolutely HAVE to leave, it should be done during a break.
And if you're not going to stay, why bother to come anyway? Jeez, the whole thing was only an hour! If you hate it so much, at least have the courtesy to stick it out and then just decide not to go to a symphony again.
BUT..... now that I got that off my chest.... :-D
The composition and the performance were beautiful. And a CD for everyone in the audience! Nice touch!
These events are few and far between, so I'll take them however I can get them.
I would definitely go again.
Oabazeed ... are you working off shore ? What did you missed it?
Anniel ... agree it was superb ... actually this is my first time watching life orchestra, and i thought it was amazing. I been playing the CD since yesterday ... on and on (i think the CD worn out now).
The late comer rather annoying though ... they shouldnt let people in once the performance started.
Anniel
