Internet Censorship ?

hi,

I would like to know if there's still internet censorship in Qatar?

My wife and I, we are thinking about moving to Qatar (working visa), but we're a bit afraid about censorship etc.

So I would like to know if internet surfing is under surveillance?

... and if sbd can be punished by the Qatari state if he is surfing on "critical" or "forbidden" sites?

(and if "yes": Which sites are forbidden?)

It's not really censorship if someone with IQ of 70 could circumvent it. I bet super cool could do it even when he is high.

Please excuse BritExpat,

This gentleman seems to be always bitter with those who question things that he already knows (not because he is smarter, but more because he does not know the motives of these questions at all)

To answer you based on my best knowledge, adult sexual content is all forbidden, because the Idea of sex is bad in Islam. It is very unfortunate but we have to live with it or find loop holes in the system.

I hope that helped.

Yes the internet is censored to the following categories: Adult material (pornography), some political and religious (or nonreligious) websites, that's pretty much it.

yes, for sure, hundreds! :D

just kidding ;-)

no, it's just that I'm working and spending much time in internet, also reading news there which may be "critical".

So I was a bit shocked as I read somewhere that there would be censorship on internet in Qatar.

We've been here for just over 5 months. Some sites are censored (via software used by the internet provider)such as BBC iplayer and anything remotely suggestive. However, most expats use a VPN (search this online). Typical costs around $5-10per month depending if you take out a monthly or longer subscription. Then you can access virtually anything you want. Hope this helps, anything else pm me.

Kiwiinqatar123 you're telling the truth? Why were you arrested? That's quite awful.

Straight up, adult websites are all banned, other than that ive came across maybe just couple of (not so popular) social networking websites or pages with certain beliefs and messeges.

Anyway you can always change your proxy or install programs to unlock it all, and no ive never heard of anyone getting persecuted for that.

funny comment :)

Thanks for your information. So there's just blocking of pages, but there seem's to be no "criminal persecution"?

No I'm not. At present I am in the local lockup in Doha for checking my e-mails. But don't worry folks, I should be out by 2055 with good behaviour. I consider myself to be one of the lucky few.

Every country has censorships...just don't do bad things in using the net that is against the laws of the land...Bad sites are already off limits unless you have new sites to be opened here then traffics will be off.Kiwi's just kidding.

The answer is yes and if that is stopping you from coming to Qatar, then please don't.

Stay where you are.
