I am applying for a job with AJI as a researcher (either in Doha or the UK).

Is there alot of competition for jobs at AJI at their UK office?

Just wondering if you could please enlighten me.

Is the interview done over the phone if you from overseas if Job offer is in Doha ( I am from the UK)?

How many days holidays as an employee do you get and what kind of package do they offer (salary, allowances, accomodation, holidays etc).

What are the working hours?

Does AJI provide any child care facilities

Generally how is it working for AJI?

 Thanks

I have a phone interview this coming Monday for a researcher position (in Doha) and was wondering what I should expect?

I am a recent British Graduate with a Masters degree.

I do not have journalism experience but have written some articles for my Politics modules. I have a Masters degree in Politics and History along with being a member of current affairs societies and Press Groups.

I was hoping to get some information as so what I may expect as this is my first interview in this sector.

With Kindest Regards.

The bureaucracy's is insane- try to be patient because it can take a long time to get confirmation...oh, only to be told they have lost your forms, (happens a lot) with them having to start the process again.....seriously, try to chill- best of luck to you :)

If you have applied good luck, I passed on a lot of info to some others on the site a while back. PM me if you want that info, but please note I can only help if you HAVE the job, I can't help you GET the job.

Always happy to help

Absolutely.

In fact, that's a new rule. No more making outrageous claims regarding oddities seen in Qatar without accompanying proof. I mean, we want interviews, we want photos, we want commentary, we want the whole Mary Ann.

Entertain me, so I don't have to keep parting with riyals for books.

Well, according to the Parking Lots purpose thread in this same area, one of the primary requirements is that you have to have the sheer moxie (foolishness?) to sunbathe in a carpark wearing nothing but a bikini during Ramadan. If you can do that, you're a shoe-in for a position. :D

i have to say this is probably not going to get a favourable response, noone likes to be pestered over potential interviewees before being asked for interview

Asa Bro Mohammed.

I think its a better idea what you recommended, i.e, chasing my application up as the waiting for a response (which I might not even receive) is stressing me out. I really prefer to know one way or the other.

I checked my email and am awaiting the contacts that you said you would so kindly forward. May Allah swt bless you for your help. Ameen.

Salam Alaikum sis.

Well, I would tend to lean towards the assumption that the HR dept at AJI is wet behind the ears and are not as organized as they should be.

this is my story.. lol

I initially submitted my application through their HRjobs email. I usually follow up with HR when I send my applications via email just to ensure that that they had received it and all was well. After getting in touch with them, they informed me that they would get back to me to verify that it had indeed been sent. Well.. they never called back and when I tried again the next day, they were less than friendly and so I demanded that they give me the name of the department responsible for hiring. They didn't so I went down to the AJ.net office, who were much more accommodating and eventually gave me the the editor in chief contact. Thing is, I would call and call and there would be no answer, so I left him a message. Then I Googled his name, got his personal email and sent my application through that. He then returned my call and verified with me that he had indeed received my application and that he 'liked' it. LOL

So after that I called back like a week later just to check up and he, at that stage informed me of the 2000 applications received.

Anyhows, Nadia and Sosaya, check your inboxes this afternoon. I will give you all the necessary contacts ok?

I dont want to give them out here on this forum for obvious reasons :)

Hi Sosaya

Just wondering if you applied for the same job as me as resercher for the production team in Doha (closing date was 16th February)? Have you had any reponse yet? Please keep me informed . I will also let you know the progress of my application

Thanks

Nadia

Salam Mohammed

JazakAllahkhair for your post. It is much appreciated. In terms of my experience I have 1 years experience in production and research.

How would I go about getting the direct contact details of the manager/ editor in chief for the particular job advertised (the closing date which was on the 16th February)? They gave me an auto reply saying that if I didnt hear from them by 4 weeks time to assume that they are not interested in me! I find that quite annoying as I prefer to know either way.

When you say that the applications for the researcher job has been closed after receiving 2,000 applications why do they bother advertising with a closing date??

Thanks again for your info. I look forward to your response

Hi Mohamed,

Thanks a lot for all this information. I am currently in Doha. Sorry I just read your reply today, so I don't know if it is already late to arrange for something as you are going to meet the editor in Chief of DPI tomorrow, but anyway, I would appreciate any contact numbers or emails.

Thanks alot for being so helpfull, it's so kind of you.

Hey Sosoya80

Are you in Doha right now?

You can contact Qatar Business or Abode, they are looking for freelancers. Additionally, you may want to try Hello Qatar as well. Though I have not contacted them directly.

I am currently getting my foot in the door with the Gulf Times.

And Abode is looking prospectful.

I have a meeting with the editor in Chief of DPI on Monday,(dpi is the parent company and publisher of Abode), so if you want, shoot me an email before then and we can arrange to have something set up, or what not, ok?

Good luck!

Mohammed

Hi Mohamed,

I applied for the researcher job too at Al Jazeera English and I thought I had a chance before reading what you wrote!! anyway, I still hope to get interviewed . Like you I am working fulltime already, but my job is media related but I don’t get the chance to write my own stories, I just translate or edit some topics.

You mentioned that you do some freelance work, and I would like to do the same but I don’t know how to start, whom to contact, etc here. Can you give me some advice?

By Momo• 15 Feb 2007 02:46
Momo

Do you reckon that AJI usually ONLY takes on applicants with post graduate degrees?

I have spoken to Russell himself, but he never answered that question directly! lol

Secondly, I don't have a degree in journalism, but I have 3 years + experience as a student journalist, and now a freelance print journalist. What are my chances? LOL, slim to none? Bear in mind that my experience is only limited to print/online journalism. Which is essentially my targeted interest, to work on the AJI website or any prospective publications.

Any feedback = immensely appreciated!

Mohammed.

Nadia,

First off, what are your qualifications?

AJI usually takes applicants with at least 3 years of journalistic experience. Researchers are actually bench journalists. That is journalists who, after experience in the field, have accumulated enough resources, source knowledge and contacts to be effective in buttressing the content of a news story or feature article. Being efficient is key here, and its very hard work! Sort of like Sub Editing, which can be grueling at times. (I know, I was a student journalist cum part time Sub Editor and I lost many weekends in front of my PC writing up my own stories and editing others!)

Sending your C.V via their Human Resources department or Website is not guaranteed to get you anywhere (though one of my freinds supposedly did that and ended up getting short listed which was good for him!). Get in touch with the department that is hiring DIRECTLY, and speak to the Editor in Chief/Manager Speak to him on the phone, ask him questions about the nature of the work and the ACTUAL caliber of candidates they are looking for. Be strong and assertive, don't let them swing you around. Cold call, lol. I have done that on too many an occasion, that is, until I got the contacts I wanted. Editors Absolutely LOVE THAT.

Once you get their PERSONAL email or Fax or whatever, Write a Strong cover letter (Check the Journalist's Tool Box for tips on how to write a good cover letter) , attach at least 2 writing samples and follow up on a bi monthly basis. That could hopefully land you an interview.

Trust me, after many cold calls, and impromptu visits to Jazeera's training office and Al Jazeera.net offices (i could not get into the main station without an entry permit (and since I did not want to 'disturb' my colleagues working there), I was able to contact the Editor In Chief directly. I sent him my C.V as well as my writing samples. And I am hoping for the best

From what he has informed me, they have stopped accepting CV's for researcher positions and are currently sifting through 2,000 Applications at the moment. Yeah.. wow... They are fairly popular.

In the mean time, I am doing some freelance work, just to hone in on my experience. I suggest you try doing the same. Bear in mind that I also hold a full time job in a field completely unrelated to journalism!

Feel free to contact me if you need any additional help. OK?

Good Luck Nadia!

No child care

Interview will be done over the phone

23-25 days holiday 8 hour days no siestas

Hours would be anything from 7am-11pm split to early or late shifts.

Accommodation included in package that also includes schooling for children up to 18. And one flight home a year.

The wages for a researcher are likely to be similar to England but without the Tax.

Contrary to wide public opinion the wages for non management staff are not that big. Operational, technical and newsroom staff all get paid similar to that in the UK we just don't pay the tax.

If you are a non EU citizen and not from AUS/NZ you have a much better chance right now.

Good Luck
