The fines need to be higher and jail time should be included for severe cases, especially importing exotic species.

As I said to DQ earlier, the new website looks good and is a big improvement. And Camy looks great on the front page :-)

I have my moments:-)

QAWS has been in operation for 6 years. There have been times that it has had to close due to lack of funding, but it always resurrects.

With our charity status there would be so much we more we could do for the animals, and the recent articles in the GT and also the new laws pasted in UAE, go a long way in helping us achieve our goals in making Qatar a transparent animal protecting society - it been a long road, there are still many miles to go, but the destination looms before us:-)

This is really good news. But the fine is too less. And I agree with Xena that they should start by giving the charity status to QAWS first.

Hopefully Qatar will soon realise that they need to take steps to help protect animals here. Fines for cruelty would be a great start, as would issuing charity status to QAWS.

Let's hope this news story and the recent article on QAWS in the Gulf Times helps to push things forward; http://www.qatarliving.com/news/160745/over-crowding-crisis-at-qatar-animal-shelter

PS. Nice to see you resurfacing Xena

just curious to what you think QAWS is, if not an SPCA?

Actually, the gentleman has met with us, and he has realised that joining us rather than opening another shelter will be better in the long run, since we are an established orgnisation, sans charity status, yes, but that is looming in the future:-)

Yes, DQ, it is important that we all highlight the plight of animals in this country, so that Qatar will be seen as moving toward a better future with regards to animal rights.

You are right.....I didn`t see it was mentioned before...and I don`t click the research ...and besides that I DO THINK we have to draw attention to this as I believe we owe it to the people who do care about animals and there well being......

The more people are aware of this the better world we can create for these animals.....

No matter if you are a animal lover or not....

I agree that Qatar should adopt animal cruelty law enforcement. The attributes of a progressive, developed society and nation can be judged by how their animals are treated.

Unquestionably, if a human were left to drown, or tied to a tree to die, or left in a box on a busy road or tied to a vehicle and dragged along the road at speed – necessary justice should be served by the perpetrator and laws are in place to deal with such crimes.

This happens to animals on an all too frequent basis. Why should the perpetrators not serve recompense for such actions?

Animals may be voiceless creatures, unable to defend themselves from such cruelty; surely it should be the duty of a more advanced species (human beings / society) to defend and protect their basic rights to co-exist without being subjected to such thoughtless, cruel and unjust actions?

You know, there is a guy trying to set up an SPCA type of thing here. I really hope he can do it soon.

Well to support a law that would inforce this in Qatar wouldn`t harm anyone....now would it?
