What has happened to QL'ers?

Amoud
By Amoud

I havent been online all weekend, and am surprised to see that the first 2 posts I opened ended up in bashing.

One started bashing Qataris, saying how without expats they will be back to riding camels, and the other is talking about how the Middle Eastern people dont value human life?

What is wrong with everyone? I find this amusing as many arabs on the site have been attacked for being "single minded" but I think this is just the same.

Why do you all think there is this shift? Change of weather perhaps?

BritExpat..please dont instigate this motion, after the closure of Graveys.. Thats the only place where an old git like me will be served cheap beer.

The robbery took place in Villagio Carrefour last year which I posted on the Forum..I was sure it was guy from India but when he was caught he turned out to be a desperate nepali. Dont know what happened to him after that..

I know from reading the posts that you have indeed had some bad experiences here. I was just wondering if you have had any good experiences as well.. I guess not. That's too bad. I hope 2009 will be the year that Qatar turns around for you! (I can always hope)

eve, so start a thread about these crimes back home so we can comment on it too...

as i said, we're reacting as per the posted threads...

FYI, they already have a criminal justice system here (which obviously sucks), Qatar is not a new country trying to set up a system from yesterday....

Eve, I agree with what you are saying. We ARE safer here. I never said otherwise as I never EVER said that western countries dont have problems, and big ones.

I was just replying to the threads... and if it about a car accident here in Doha...there is no point bringing up the dangerous of living in NYC or London or anywhere else as a response...

I guess those of you from Western and other crime ridden countries have totally forgotten the problems we have there. Colorado we had 13 students killed by students at Columbine High School, if the gas cylinders had gone up many more would of died. We had the Oklahoma City Bombings, Virginia Tech shootings, etc. etc. etc. we have huge amount of crimes, murders, rapes etc. and many get off scot free, look at OJ. The difference here is its a new country trying to set up its justice system. Instead of making negative comments try to come up with solutions or ways to help would be much more productive. I have seen major improvements in the 15 years and they will continue. My friend was just in the traffic police office and boys that drive their vehicles on 2 wheels get their vehicles taken and sold! So thigns are happening behind the scenes we don't see. I am glad I am safe enough to go out at night and not be afraid of robbery or getting shot, like many other places in the world. Given guns are not easily permitted we have much less crime. Yes they have to get the driving under control, wealth has contributed as teens drive high powered vehicles. When people freak that I live in the MiddleEast I have to tell them I am safer than they are!

Deedee... to be honest, I came here for the money much more than for the experience of being in Qatar. Have lived in a few different places and if it was for the experience I would go elsewhere.

Unfortunatelly my replies to the threads..well.. if you read what it is about...it is hard to say something positive. No, I dont specially like it here. Whenever I can I take some time and head off somewhere else. And to be honest, when I start having good experiences and finally meet all these amazing friendly qataris...then I am sure I wont have a lot to complain.

But honestly, if I can not speak my mind whats the point on having this website? If I start reading good things then maybe my opinion will change.

The great diversity of people here and the wonderful things I learn from them about the world and the different cultures, customs, traditions that they have, so far greatly outweigh the petty inconveniences and annoyances that I feel on a daily basis living here.

I guess this (QL)is one of the places where people feel safe to rant and rave and be negative about Qatar.

By hisashi_mitsui• 11 Jan 2009 13:41
hisashi_mitsui

well, my posts were all negative too, i'm guilty with that...

but anyway, as i posted before in another thread...i still like living and working here in Qatar coz the positive still outweighs the negatives such as those inhumane and unfair activities...

with all due respect, why are you still here? You seem to only have negative things to say each and every time? Do you have anything positive to say about Qatar? I have been here 5 years and YES I came not for the money, we were making plenty before. We did come for the adventure, which includes learning about a new culture and I can honestly say I have felt hospitality from Qataris. Is every day sunshine and flowers? No I have also had my share of frustrating days.

Yes it is annoying to get in car accidents (been there done that) deal with the justice system here (been there done that) but luckily I have a broader view of life. These are small things in the whole scheme of life. As for me, I will look for the positive.

I'm not trying to bash you at all, just trying to help you deal with what really seems to be a burden to you--living here. I hope you can either leave as soon as possible, or find a way to cope. Good luck.

Carol, no one took away their rights to be upset. It is the means in which they are expressing it that is troubling. I dont think it is the entire population of Qatars fault that one guy got hit by a local and was blamed. I also dont think that the whole Middle East is a bunch of demons with no regard for human life because one woman murdered her maid.

I too have been surprisd by the venom this morning. People with legitimate grievances start a thread, but then bigotry and pent up hatred takes over.

What we tend to forget is that similar cases occur all over the world and to generalize all too easy..
