What are Parking Lots for?

Gypsy
By Gypsy

I'm a bit confused today because I always thought that parking lots were for parking cars, or at the most skate boarding, but today I found out that they are also for sunbathing in while wearing a bikini. Or at least that's what the girl laying out in the parking lot next to Lulu Center thought.

I mean, I'm sorry, I'm usually the first person to say do what you want, but laying out in your bikini in a busy parking lot with labourers and women in hijab and abaya walking by you DURING RAMADAN is the most disrespectful thing I have ever witnessed in Qatar.

Is there anyone here who thinks that was in anyway appropriate?

Probably yeah, I couldn't be bothered to read the thread lest I have to read all the tedious posts from Darude, so apologies if you already said that. I just remembered this thread and the conversation I had about it with a colleague.

The person involved was NOT FROM AL JAZEERA ENGLISH

I think there was some people thinking she might have been because it was near our accommodation.

Well she was spotted by someone from work and its a small place and she was NOT from here.

We know MUCH better than to do that sort of thing.

A ‘chilling’ experience

Dear Sir,

One comes across many strange sights in town nowadays but none so strange as the one I saw yesterday.

In a supermarket, browsing along the fridges I came across a Western woman sitting with her rear end into the fridge. How unhygienic. Yoghurt anyone? No thanks, I’ll pass.

The little *clique* wants to know why Gypsy aka Doha Girl (I don’t want to play on QL anymore and am going to start my own site) would lie? Hello people! *ATTENTION*, which you have all given her. Alexa and Corn follow you around like lost little puppies, sticking up for you any chance they get. For you to believe such a story makes you just as pathetic as she is- next thing you know- you’ll be bowing down for the royal princess and flapping those lips just like her.

Its in Gyspy nature to make up lies- one minute she knows heaps of staff at aljazeera- then for the record doesn’t. Well which is it?--- Keep those lips flapping and endless ravings going as you’re highly amusing and keep so many of us entertained. There's nothing wrong with posting something funny. In fact, so long as you're not causing offence, there's nothing wrong even with posting absolute rubbish and showing off your creative side. In primary school we used to call it composition. Great fun! In even the mundane scheme of things though, I'm sure nobody really cares whether you really saw something or not,... me included.

I just don't believe your story. And in these my idle moments, I've decided to say so. Watching your feathers fly is unexpected, if amusing in a distant but vaguely compelling kind of way. Of course, feel free to ignore me.

Imagine my shock as a mother when I saw my daughter. I left a thin, little girl of 14 and when I came back after a year, my daughter is wearing slim fit shirt that emphasized her breast (which I think was too big for her age of 15 at that time) and shows off her belly button. And the pants she wears shows her undies when she bends or moves....

Iam to go home next year on her 17th birthday...just hope and praying she won't get those tatooes and body piercing that teeners are crazy about...

Yeah, Oryx, you hit the nail on the head with the 'tarnishes all Western ladies' bit. One silly bint who had no brains where she came from comes and acts stupid, then it's easy to create general sweeping stereotypes regarding *all* the other similar-looking women.

i hope she gets prosecuted.

One morning a student of mine came in upset because her picnic at al khor beach had been ruined... a western couple had turned up and the girl had a bikini on and all the labourers started coming to the beach etc etc.

Sorry it is our business... we live here, a lot of us respect where we live and we dont like others giving us a bad name.

Certain things are 'everyone's business' because we are a community.

If I saw a woman getting hit in the street - I would not 'mind my own business'.

Oh wait a second...there are not many appropiate places in Doha where a girl can lay on a bikini and sunbath...

Sad, this would never have happened if they never closed the Palm tree island.

Will people get offended, yes, but only because they choose to be. Not everyone in the world is of the same religion. Why can't people go about their lives and worship the way they want, without expecting everyone to adhere to their "rules"? Why don't the U.S. force everyone to practice Christianity? Exactly, if this girl isn't from AJ and just happened to be sunbathing in front of the AJ apartments were many single girls live, then there is a really good possibilty that she could get the innocent girls in that building in a lot of trouble. Especially, if like DG says, they're are already rumours that they are sunbathing topless on the roof.

And this is more then just cultural sensitivity, what she was doing was technically illegal, she could have been arrested or even worse attacked by a man in the area.

Your first comment is wrong. Plenty of them live in apartments. In fact the majority of them do. Don't know where you got that info from.

As I know:

1. Al Jazeera TV. is not providing Apartments for their western staff! If they are going to do so, they will give them a villa or a portion of a villa in Al Jazeera Compounds!

2.Consuming that there is a western living in Aljazeera apartments, there is also a security guard who keeps watching around always! If they see it they are going to kick that person out of the TV!

So! I am going to say she might be one of the thousands of Europeans or Westerns living in that area!

Have you had a falling out with people from the AJE buildings? Why else would you want to cause trouble for the single females there?

No, AJE doesn't just employ the Brits and Aussies, and NO they are not all single in those buildings.

All it will take Gypsy dear is for ONE senior member of AJE to read this, which will cause controversy around the building making life more difficult for the female staff. Or is this your aim?? It may be funny for you, but potentially many females (who already have a hard enough time here)will be subjected to more grief- and here I was thinking that you knew first hand how hard it is for single women living in Qatar.

Oh and the thought that you know people in those buildings makes me feel ill!! It's all in good humor right??

My Islamic values wouldn't be offended if I saw this girl and I don't think yours should, gypsy. Are you so totally qatarized that a sight of a girl in a bikini sends you into a frenzy? And so you would have stopped the car and told her what? Obviously, sunbathing in a bikini in the parking is not very smart, but first of all I don't believe for a moment that you actually saw what you say you saw, and second even if she was there, that was frankly none of your business, you not being a law enforcement of any kind. And I don't see why you are still going on about it. Get a life.

Szafer....uh, ya. Wrong thread I think.

qalove, I've seen girls (including myself) in bikinis before of course, however I've been living in this country for 2 years now and my coworker for 12, and neither of us have ever seen such a blatent disrespect for the values of this country. Not only that, but she was doing this next to a construction site, which means she was putting herself in a lot of danger.

What I don't get is why Gypsy got all worked up about it. Gypsy, are you local? Are you fasting? Haven't you ever seen a girl in a swimsuit? What's it to you? I would understand if some of the Muslim people here got offended, but you? Really, there is no need for you to get so shocked and take offense.

i am a big fan of short srirt and open shoulders.. but Qatar has changed me.. you have to respect the place where you live... I noticed lately a lot of girls are wearing extremly short skirt, or their tops are too open... but to be in bikini in the middle of town??? Someone, who hired her, should have explained to her what is appropriate and what is not in this country...

You wanted to know something more disrespectful. Yesterday, I saw a guy winding down his car window and gobbing on the car next to him. Nice.

Well she was blonde and white, and behind the Al Jazeera TV Apartments, so I'm going to say Aussie or British, since those are the people AJ hires.

It was seriously the most disrespectful and stupid thing I have ever seen anyone do in this country.

i agree with you gypsy... it's a very disrespectful act especially on this month of Ramadan and to think that this is Middle East... where it is not actually allowed to do such thing in public... if there were some police that time, she might be put into jail...

My friend and I were in the car and we just were so shocked we couldn't believe it. We were in a rush to get somewhere so we never stopped. We went back a bit later, but she was gone. As there was a cop directing traffic not 20 feet away I;m wondering if he didn't arrest her.
