Kerala's love affair with alcohol

People in the southern state of Kerala are the heaviest drinkers in India, and sales of alcohol are rising fast. The BBC's Soutik Biswas examines why.

Jacob Varghese says he began drinking when he was nine years old, sipping on his father's unfinished whisky and brandy in glass tumblers

WK Alcohol is heavily taxed in Kerala...eg A bottle of Beer is almost 3 times costly than say in Goa or Pondicherry.

"The state of Kerala stands first in per capita consumption of liquor at 8.3 litres, followed by Punjab 7.9 litres."

Says:

(but this was in 2001)

I am not so sure. They are saying in the article that the average is 8 Litres per person in Kerala, it is 12.44 litres per person in a combined average of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pardesh, Delhi and Chandigarh..

Infact in Chandigarh it is around 100 litres per year if you consider only the adults for calculations.

See the link for detailed report.
