Visa's & Family residency

Hi,

My wife has recieved her working visa today, so we should hopefully be arriving in 4-5 weeks. Could someone please clarify that the best thing for myself and our son to do is to obtain a six month visa from the Qatar embassy and wait until our family residency, or is there another of way of doing this?

Any comments would be appreciated as I have heard conflicting stories.
