This in arabic is called a miswak (or siwak). The twigs are from a regional tree called Salvadora Persica. The bark is chewed off one end and the fibres resemble a brush and is used that way. Lots of studies have been done and results showed that apart from the physical action of brushing, there were natural anti-microbial effects aswell.

OK thats my egghead response after reading it up on the net :)

That is what some of the locals use for dental care. I don't know what kind of wood it is but I assume it tastes good.

But seriously, if you see some of the locals, they are brushing their teeth with something that looks like wood, with one hand holding the steering, one foot on the dash etc.

I agree angelo. The price of dental care has skyrocketed recently and I have had enough.

I threw away my oral B and colgate yesterday and have replaced them with a large log which hangs from the ceiling of my bathroom by my now redundant dental floss.

before bed I take two or three minutes to vigorously chew the log to remove plaque and bacteria.

Aside from the splinters I am very please with the results and I have saved a fortune!!
