Sixteen Afghan civilians killed in rogue U.S. attack
(Reuters) - Sixteen Afghan civilians, including nine children, were shot dead in what witnesses described as a nighttime massacre on Sunday near a U.S. base in southern Afghanistan, and one U.S. soldier was in custody.

While U.S. officials rushed to draw a line between the rogue shooting and the ongoing efforts of a U.S. force of around 90,000, the incident is sure to further inflame Afghan anger triggered when U.S. soldiers burned copies of the Koran at a NATO base.

U.S. officials said an American staff sergeant from a unit based in Washington state was in custody after the attack on villagers in three houses. Multiple civilians were also wounded, a spokesman for the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) coalition said

President Barack Obama called his Afghan counterpart Hamid Karzai promising to establish the facts quickly and "to hold fully accountable anyone responsible."

There were conflicting reports of how many shooters were involved, with U.S. officials asserting that a lone soldier was responsible, in contrast to witnesses' accounts that several U.S. soldiers were present.

The incident was one of the worst of its kind since the U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan in 2001.

The U.S. Embassy in Kabul said anti-U.S. reprisals were possible following the killings, just as the Koran burning incident a few weeks earlier had touched off widespread anti-Western protests in which at least 30 people died.

Neighbors and relatives of the dead said they had seen a group of U.S. soldiers arrive at their village in Kandahar's Panjwayi district at about 2 a.m., enter homes and open fire.

An Afghan man who said his children were killed in the shooting spree accused soldiers of later burning the bodies.

Obama said he was deeply saddened. "This incident is tragic and shocking and does not represent the exceptional character of our military and the respect that the United States has for the people of Afghanistan," Obama said in a statement.

superiority complex. Can you see how their Secretary of State and UN representative talks about world politics? Would you even consider these people and their bosses to apologize sincerely?

Just wish.

Do you ever imagine what kind of strain will it bring US if all soldiers were ask to come back to their hometown? Their only option is to leave current locations by creating new areas of conflict. That's BUSINESS.

I suppose the simplest answer is that they are too powerful...

Whilst we are being vocal, it is interesting that Karzai has kept pretty much quiet.

This is not the First Time Someone from Coalition Forces or Specially American Troops have killed Innocent Civilians, And you can't call that "Collateral Damage"...

I would Consider this Act of "Terrorism", & What happens next, Nothing "HE" Would be Court martial, Put in Prison for 6 months to an Year, then would be out roaming around on the Streets of U.S.A!!!

Did anyone Condemned the Burning of Quran at Bagram Airbase just a Month back, "Barrack Obama" Apologized to Afghan People, But that is not Enough!!!!

Why aren't Any Western Leader being Prosecuted for "Crimes Against Humanity"???

I fear NONE..or so it seems.

Seriously, even I could have told them that this was going to be one great big f.ck up.

I seriously hope they are from now on keeping their own people out of the ME and Africa and Asia.

Very very saddening..Allahu Musta'an. Yes the perpetrator might have been a victim of mental illness however he could have also been motivated by brainwashing, racist hatred, etc. There is no way anyone can justify the crime as anything short of cold blooded murder, and if this criminal is not prosecuted to the toughest degree then lest assured crimes of this nature will continue,Audubillah! And yes sadly it is people like him that bring disgrace and disrepute to all those well intentioned brave soldiers the world over!

"US Army should regularly monitors their marine's psyclogical conditions and suspecting anyone of any disorders should be sent back home."

They do. And they urge other soldiers to report anyone who appears to be showing signs of breaking down or depression or a host of other mental illnesses.

Unfortunately when you have a standing army of over 14 million people on active duty, you are going to miss the odd person. Especially in a high stress environment like Afghanistan.

What is surprising is not that it happened but that it doesn't happen more often.

What he did was inexcusable and he will be prosecuted. May the ones he killed rest in peace.

I totally agree with Khanan. The act of killing innocent children and other people is barbaric and should be condemned. It is very easy to make statements that the soldier was having some breakdowns. Who knows if it was a brekdown or a deliberate massacre? If it was happened in any of the European countries there will be a couples of threads here condemning the act.

Im pretty sure this guy didn't even want to be in Afghanistan it was his government that made him go there. But he went along with the other thousands of brave soldiers to go do his job.

Unfortunately he had a mental break down due to the stresses of war, he is not the first and certainly wont be the last person that this happens to. I would love to see how you would cope with going to war Monkey! But Im pretty sure you wouldn't have the balls to go in the first place...

This is a truly tragic event and Im very sorry to all involved and my thoughts go out to all of those families who have lost someone in this incident.
