Stop Attacking

Dear Ql Members,

I had requested this sometime back and I would like to request this once again.

English is not the native language of most of the Ql members, so please dont attack a member by commenting on their command of forming sentences or words in English.
It only shows that we are unable to communicate with that member when we decide to resort to such kind of attacks. Is it really worth trying to belittle someone (whatever be the reason)?

Lets try not to attack someone's stated profession(fact or fiction, troll or genuine member). Does their profession have anything to do with our discussions, until it does, lets leave the individual profession out of the subject of discussion, heated or peaceful?

Is this really difficult to do?
Lets all try to choose our words carefully.

have a nice day.
chill.

I agree with the first part of what Gypsy said, it is pathetic to cry to Qatari every time someone says something you dislike. However I disagree that it is wrong to make fun of someones lack of English skills, when some dude replies all the time with comments such as"FUKA A u bich krazi losa, u no nothing" then I feel I should have every right to mock them and laugh at their expense. However if they are trying to post in a civilized way, but their english skills are poor, then yes it would be wrong to mock them.

Some people just want to poke their dirty nose with un wanted coments and many a time they them selves will not know what they r posting.

if in a discussion one has to turn around and attack the way a member has framed his/her sentence, thats a real low tactic to emerge smart or whatever, just because one thinks he/she can write or communicate better than the other.

my question, is it really necessary to resort to such silly stuff?

cant we have a discussion as adults without making assumptions about an individual.just stick to the topic instead of trying to derogate someone.

fight on the topic of discussion, can it be done without getting personal? i sure hope so.

happy heart

Good points all round people.

I think attacking a person for poor english has no place on a board like this, but people should be allowed to disagree with each other. Is that not the point of discussion?? We all get to share our own point of view? Most discussions worth having will "offend" somebody, all the more reason to have them imho. There is really no point hiding in a bubble where only your own pov exists. Obviously attacking someone based on race, sex, faith etc is out of order but informed opinions and the differences between us are what makes life interesting!!!

Just my two dirhams :-)

If you don't like it that someone is taking the mickey, then stick up for the person being made fun of. It's silly to keep resorting to "If you don't stop I'll tell Qatari you're breaking the guidelines!" Also if a person is resorting to making fun of someones spelling or lack of English then they're just being childish and stupid and should be ignored and ridiculed by the community.

Most international sites are blocking websites promoted by alleged spam, due to complaints of some of it's members is very risky in my opinion. It is this sort of sensorhip that borders on constitutional infringement.

This one size fits all mentality will never work. I think it would be more appropriate for us to allow it's members to TURN ON or TURN OFF this blocking scheme. The admin have the technology to do it, but why make it system wide?

It should be the USERS choice. Why would I want to let some other person decide what sites or topics I would or would not like to see? If I like vitamins, and they don't, why should they get to have a say so? Ok that is the problem with this approach.

I can see both sides of this. I do not agree with taking the mickey out of people because they don't use or spell a word properly or because of their beliefs. There is a difference between childish bullying and intelligent discussion. For example, that Prem rape thing, it was provocative and people are well able to discuss and shoot him down without resorting to personal insults. Personally, I think that QL is fairly self regulating and I would be sad if people stopped debating and discussing. But I don't like the f off type stuff. But I also think that people should be able to post uncensored and then deal with the outrage of the community if they deserve it. The community are capable of doing this without bullying or swearing.

The guidelines are here

They in no way interfere with freedom of expression or speech.

I agree censorship should not be used lightly.

By decency do you mean the aim is to maintain a level of respect and equality?

I see the guidelines and enforcement of them as enablers of such an environment.

If you want to go to the old forum there'd be no end to threads that need weeding out/editing. Call it an amnesty for what's passed!

"Don’t post anything that could be perceived as illegal or offensive (i.e. racist, pornographic, sexist, obscene, profane, vulgar, derogatory, hateful or threatening)."

yet there seem to be lots of posts are

for example how can someone get away with posting this:

http://www.qatarliving.com/discussion/arab-muslims-dating-asian-girls-in-qatar-14dec2006#comment-30616

and 6 months later this post hasn't been deleted or the user banned?

I think this reflects badly on QL and it's members. Perhaps more moderators are needed to assist in enforcement of the guidelines?
