Some questions about Qatar (visas, misc.)

I'm a female student travelling to Qatar this week from Canada, for 4 days. I have a few questions for the locals. Sorry if they're answered elsewhere, but it's my first time travelling overseas and I'm not sure if I'm entirely prepared.

1) I heard something about needing to purchase a Tourist Visa once I arrive in Qatar. Do I get this in the airport on arrival, or what? Can I pay with US cash?

2) Are there many flies in Qatar? Should I bring bug repellant?

3) Are public toilets generally western-style, and is there usually a good supply of toilet tissue, etc.?

4) Are there many game arcades around? Specifically... if anyone can tell me if they've ever seen a Dance Dance Revolution game in Qatar, and could tell me where it's located, I'd be quite thankful. Yeah, yeah, I'm a nerd.

I can't think of the other question I had right now, but if/when I remember I'll be sure to ask.

Thanks!

50 degrees - , posts like this make me question the wisdom of what i am doing - i am not a lover of the heat, when it gets to 25-30 degrees, let alone 50

better bring a hat

You need a credit card to pay for the visa entry they normally don't take cash.

There are a lot of Neufoundlanders teaching here so you will find some help if you need it. I do know one of them, so perhaps if you are stuck I can help you. My e-mail is on my profile.

However, if you are interested you can also hire a limosine with a driver for a small amount of money (depends on the company) who wouldbe able to take you around Qatar for a couple of hours. Much better than an arcade in any case.

Questions:

What Hotel?

It's a whopping 50 degrees here today, you don't have to worry to much about leaving your hotel.

Clothes: bring anything you want.

Nah, definitely not the most important thing on my list, it's just that I'll be travelling with two male instructors from a campus here in Newfoundland that I haven't met before, and if they decide to run off and leave me, I'd rather not travel too far from the hotel on my own. If I lucked into having an arcade near the hotel, well then that'd be great ;)

About the tourist visa... what if I don't have a credit card? I'm leaving in 2 days, so I'm a little worried about that.

Basically this whole trip is a total surprise, so I've had no time at all to prepare. My college here (College of the North Atlantic) is having a graduation at their Qatar campus this week, and only Thursday the VP invited me to come, all expenses paid, as I've won a couple of awards they seem to think is worth something. Anyways, I didn't even have a passport until 3 days ago, I'm out shopping for suitable clothes, and I'm starting to run out of time.

i must say ... first time out of North Ameirca ... in Persian Gulf for 4 days most important thing - Dance Revolution - omg u must be so addicted to it.

I personally think its a shame about the mall .. they had quite a modest arcade ...it was pretty crap bust shud have refurbished it rather than out the One and salam or what not in its place

Hi Kierehana!

Welcome to Qatar - Ahlan Wa Sahlan.

Right, I will try and answer your questions (anyone else reading this please feel free to update or correct me!)

1 - Tourist Visa: You need to have a credit card to pay for your Tourist Visa when you arrive in Qatar. You will get it on arrival at the airport. The fee is QR 55 (roughly US$15).

2 - Flies - Yes, of course there are flies! But not to the extent where they follow you around! Besides, the places where you are likely to hang out - no flies there! At this time of the year, you should be more worried about making sure you are lathered in sun bloc!

3 - Public toilets - 99% western style. Toilet tissue - haven't had a problem so far (in shopping malls that is!) - but always carry a small pack of tissues or wet wipes with you - just in case!

4 - Yeah, there are Game Arcades in City Center and Landmark. I think most of the malls have arcades. Not sure of Dance Dance revolution (some other person might be able to help answer that!)

Hope this helps..
