Socrates' triple filter test (2) - let's try again without hi-jacking

Next time someone starts to spread gossip, think of this:

In ancient Greece (469 - 399 BC), Socrates was widely lauded for his wisdom. One day the great philosopher came upon an acquaintance who ran up to him excitedly and said, "Socrates, do you know what I just heard about one of your students?"

"Wait a moment," Socrates replied. "Before you tell me I'd like you to pass a little test. It's called the Triple Filter Test."

"Triple filter?"

"That's right," Socrates continued. "Before you talk to me about my student let's take a moment to filter what you're going to say. The first filter is Truth. Have you made absolutely sure that what you are about to tell me is true?"

"No," the man said, "actually I just heard about it and.."

"All right," said Socrates. "So you don't really know if it's true or not. Now let's try the second filter, the filter of Goodness. Is what you are about to tell me about my student something good?"

"No, on the contrary."

"So," Socrates continued, "you want to tell me something bad about him, even though you're not certain it's true?"

The man shrugged, a little embarrassed.

Socrates continued. "You may still pass the test though, because there is a third filter - the filter of Usefulness. Is what you want to tell me about my student going to be useful to me?"

"No, not really."

"Well," concluded Socrates, "if what you want to tell me is neither True nor Good nor even Useful, why tell it to me at all?"

The man was defeated and ashamed. This is the reason Socrates was a great philosopher and held in such high esteem.

And it's also the reason why Socrates never found out that Plato was banging his wife.

the site I looked at with the quotes gave some variations, one of which was .......

By all means marry. If you get a good wife, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher and that is a good thing for any man.

Socrates

the statement was simple and my interpretation was simple.

your interpretation is diplomatic:P

BTW. Every married man is a philosopher, irrespective :)))))

By jauntie• 13 Sep 2007 01:21

NO! I think it just means the husband becomes philosophical about the situation, which is a GOOD thing.

his wife was not good?

False words are not only evil in themselves, but they infect the soul with evil.

Socrates

As to marriage or celibacy, let a man take which course he will, he will be sure to repent.

Socrates

My advice to you is get married: if you find a good wife you'll be happy; if not, you'll become a philosopher.

Socrates

And so on, and so on !!

PM said FIRST: TO CLARIFY ...

while the story is an amusing one and has some wisdom in it, the last line is NOT true. Both of them were well-known homosexuals :-)

Correct me if I am wrong but could they have even met? I seem to recall from somewhere that Plato was a student of Socrates, or was it the other way round? Plato was homo-sexual but Socrates? Bi-sexual? Those Greeks lived a fast and lose sex life! :D

Was worth putting it up again, cos I think it is EXCELLENT !

Hopefully some will see it for the first time if it stays near the top.

Truly one of the cleverest 'funnies' I've seen in here for a while :D

Is that last line true? about Plato? Also, at first I thought it was pointless to repost this since everyone obviously already was fighting about it in someway...but then I realized that I never even ended up reading the post, just the back and forth comments. ;) Ha. So thanks for reposting.

I love the point this post makes, I am going to use this when people tell stories about others! It is really something that bothers me, so now I know what to say to get them to be quiet.

I just read the last line now too. ITS A KILLER! MAybe the last line should be posted in bold letters, hehe.

I am seriously split up by my sides!

ROFLMAO over and over and over!

how true it is, but again just another analogy about life... it is a funny line, yet it is so true. We get so stuck in the drama (just need to take a look at the hi-jacking) and one day find out that life has been happening around us, without us.
