Smoking Bans: How far is too far?
Big news in Canada today is that 3 provinces and soon to be 5 (out of 10) have banned smoking in cars with children under the age of 16.
"Drivers and passengers in Ontario who don't butt out in cars carrying children won't be fined more than $250 for each offence, a much lighter fine than originally envisioned by Liberal backbencher David Orazietti's bill, which set penalties up to $1,000.
Nova Scotia and British Columbia have already outlawed the practice, which critics liken to child abuse. Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick are also considering a similar ban.
Health care groups who lobbied hard for a ban praised the province for taking the right steps to protect children's health.
"Doctors have been calling for a ban since 2004 and raising awareness about the serious impacts on children of second-hand smoke in cars," Ontario Medical Association president Dr. Ken Arnold said in a statement."

Frankly I think this is awesome and I'm eagerly awaiting the law being extended to private homes, if not in fact a nation-wide ban on cigarettes. What do you all think?
Cigarette smoke - both that which is inhaled and second hand smoke - contains approximately 4000 different chemicals of which 50 or so are carcinogenic. Some of the carcinogenic chemicals found in cigaratte smoke include formaldehyde, cyanide, and arsenic. A recent study that measured the amount of formaldehyde in cigarette smoke stated that a single cigarrette can give off almost 0.1 mg/m3 of this specific carcingen. A pack of cigarettes would give off approximately 1.5 - 2 mg/m3. In the US, occupational exposure to formaldehyde in the work environment cannot exceed .75 mg/m3 in an 8 hour period. If a worker is exposed beyond this level then respiratory protection is required because formaldehyde is a known human carcingen. Now picture a kid stuck in the car on an eight trip with a smoker. Do the math and you can see the exposure level - he should be wearing a respirator.
if you don't smoke, there is no chance that you will taste marijuana (smoke marijuana, I mean). Yes, medically-speaking, marijuana is prescribe to certain individual to cure a desease or ailment, but remember, it is under physicians supervision.
The issue in the article and what Gypsy is trying to raise-up is how to continue to minimize if not totally eliminate the danger of smoking primarily the second-hand smoke which is already proven to be more dangerous that the first-hand smoke.
Also, for the good of majority, the goverment can always place a law that will not constitute human right. It is more weight for non-smokers not to inhale the smoke of other people who's only concern is their own satisfaction without care for the other's welfare.
"dgoodrebel will always be the rebellious good one"
it was even a legislated action. I am not preaching but every time there is a chance, I tell my friends to quit smoking specially if I see them not in perfect health. Just different ways of saying it, but always sending the message that smoking will not give you any good thing in their health and other peoples health
"dgoodrebel will always be the rebellious good one"
As far as i remember , smoking was and has always been a "social" thing. Some people smoke marijuana for medicinal purposes, but not tobacco.
I agree that people should be "educated" on the dangers of smoking (primary and secondary0, but preaching is taking things a bit too far..
So you don't think the government should interfere if someone is abusing their child in their home?
In regards to a total ban, it's not long before the health care costs of smoking related disease outweigh the profit from taxes, especially as the number of smokers continues to decline rapidly. Once this happens, you'll see a total ban.

To me, smoking is a bad habit. However, enacting a law to ban it in private homes "smells" of big brother and I would not like a government to legislate on this type of thing. What I do in my home should be my concern.
As for total ban? Remember that governments make big bucks from taxes on tobacco and alcohol.
I am not bringing religion in this issue. When smoking was first conceived, it was a medical thing then to relieved certain deppression or so and so. But at present times when the danger of smoking is already known to all (not to non-smokers only), it is the medical people saying it's bad to our health. Now if anyone wanted to stay on the bad side, the good people have the obligation to tell these people that SMOKING IS DANGEROUS TO YOUR HEALTH. (and that is RESPECT by the GOOD people to the "***" ones. As good Christians, our obligation is to reprimand those doing what they "perceived" as good but medically-proven to be BAD

Drinking infront of a mirror make you proud :)
Drinking alcohol in front of your child doesn't adversely effect their health, smoking around them does.

you sure she is going to be in heaven? Proably in hell you can get all kinds of ciggy..lol
They dont deserve any respect for slowly killing people around them.
Respect people who pollute our air oh and probably say thank you to for passive smoking.
Why should I respect smokers? I'm not killing them?
Visit www.qatarhappening.com
my point is that there shuld be a two way respect, as much as smokers should consider non-smokers, non-smokers should consider smokers... and the world would never ban tobacco altogether and you know that... just coz its happened in canada and possibly NZ, its NEVER gonna happen worldwide.
Ok let's not brings religions in this.

LOL!! chill gyps... i never really argue in threads, its not me, i just wanted to make my point...
these people will learn their lesson late in their life, and I AM VERY SURE HOW SORRY THEY WILL BE. I KNOW A LOT OF PEOPLE WHO'S LIFE NOW IS REALLY TERRIBLE BECAUSE THEY PREFER TO STICK WITH THEIR "perceived" good addictive habit. If you visit Philippines, try to pass by Lung Center of the Philippines, a hospital dedicated to cure lung ailments 99% caused by smoking
"dgoodrebel will always be the rebellious good one"
go to afghanistan have as much as you want and what ever you want you will find everything nothing is banned there or illegal go go its heaven enjoy all i will come and help you. :?

keep fighting Gypsy.... we'll see who'll win.... muahahahahaha!!!!!
Abu American, what if it's a stand alone house with children inside? The children need to breath the air in their home.
New Fatima, face it, in Canada selling tabocco isn't big business anymore, and unfortunatly because of this thing called oxygen, which we breath and which flows, you can't just walk away. If we banned asbestos, we can ban cigarettes.
Visit www.qatarhappening.com
it's legal, AND IT'S A BIG BUSINESS, DO YOU SUPPORT IT?
"dgoodrebel will always be the rebellious good one"
kidnapping and robbery are illegal.... selling tobacco is not.... DDDUUUUHHHHH!!!!
business also, are you supporting it, also???????????????
"dgoodrebel will always be the rebellious good one"
People will do whatever they have to do, I don't think for one minute that the general multitude of smokers even think they are damaging other peoples health.
They will accept the areas where they are banned but will find a new space to smoke.
Think about all the Shisha smokers here will that stop - hmm I don't think so as it is tradition in many Arab countries.
If the smokers stay in areas confined for them I have nothing against them smoking but in enclosed and confined spaces I don't like it especially in a restaurant when I am eating.
that is why I don't allow people to enter my office while smoking. Even if you're the US President and you need to talk to me, then follow my rules, NO SMOKING
"dgoodrebel will always be the rebellious good one"
exactly, it is a HUGE business... and im all for supporting businesses!! LLLLOOOLLL!!!! ok ok.... khalas.
of others. There is no other recourse but to warn for the danger of second-hand smoke but first hand smoke as well. Nobody will argue that is medically proven the danger of cigarette and tobacco smoking. But it is a big business, the only reason it can not be totally banned.
But if in our individuality, we realize it, there'll be no argument as to when to stop it or not.
"dgoodrebel will always be the rebellious good one"
each to their own i say.... why should we as smokers make the effort to stay away from you, why dont YOU stay away from US??????? if you dont like the smoke, walk away....
from smoking to one night stand
cant you stick to the topic :?
[img_assist|nid=73057|title=.|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=|height=0]
Oh boo hoo, I put a known highly addictive substance to my lips and *SHOCK* became addicted! Pitty me :(. Please let me go out and blow it in everyones face so they to can die like me!
Give me a break, no matter how 'considerate' you are, people are still breathing in your poison, therefore it should be completely banned.
Visit www.qatarhappening.com
its all BS if you ask me!!! ok, shopping malls and office spaces i can do, but come on, out in the public open air and in my PRIVATE home, thats not being fair... i dont think there is anything wrong with smoking out in public and private homes as long as you are considerate to those around you, if there are people around you. people who are anti-cigarettes often get a bit too personal with this, not all smokers are the same. i try to be as considerate as possible, unless you piss me off then you WILL get a face full of SMOKE! and even as a smoker, i too hate the smell of second hand smoke, thats y i try to be considerate.
on the topic of it being an addiction, only a smoker will ever understand the psychology that they go thru. so those that dont smoke, really shouldnt speak like they know wht its like or judge smokers. ask anyone who has given up and they will not tell you that it was easy. but we shouldnt discriminate.. i may find alcohol really offensive but im not gonna stop a friend of mine from drinking...
It takes at least two days to evaluate how good they are in bed! :-P
"...You might have seen a housefly, maybe even a superfly, but I bet you ain’t never seen a donkey fly. Ha, Ha, Ha..." Donkey
not necessary... it’s pretty safe, when the protection is used..
.. maybe smokers should consider to start using the Gas Masks?
When you have a one night stand you take the risks. If you're stupid enough to get an STD, then, well no sympathy. Unfortunatly people can't stop breathing.

"Tell that to all the people that get beaten up, when there partner returns home drunk!"
OR
Tell that to all the people who get beaten up by their partner , when they return home drunk!:)
People having one night stands doesn't harm other people. Smoking does. And drinking and driving is banned and in most countries (including Canada and this one) heavily punished, as it should be.
Visit www.qatarhappening.com
Well unlike the effects of second hand smoke, abusive drunks don't happen 100% of the time. Also, not everyone who drinks is abusive and not every abuser drinks. There's not a direct correlation between the two, like say second hand smoke and lung cancer.

if you are SOOOOOOOOO much concerned about the smokers why dont you join the cancer hospital here and start a no smoking campaign there than sitting on chair and showing your sympathy.
Sympathizing doesnt help not a bit.

Tell that to all the people that get beaten up, when there partner returns home drunk!
YOU definitely don't like canadians...lol...
Yup it is, but drinking it doesn't harm the people around you, unlike smoking, and drinking responsbily doesn't cause the long term health problems that smoking does.

I wonder how Gypsy feels about Alcohol? That's also an addictive substance!

Good Morning, having watched a report on German TV recently it said many good going pubs and restaurants have had a decline in their turnover because it is now forbidden to smoke there.
It is much worse to be a passive smoker as I remember one colleague of mine she was a chain smoker and when I went home after work I smelt very badly of smoke.
I find smoking in the car at any time destable.

Well you resorted to the silliness of slagging off my spelling, which denotes that I hit a nerve. Why should I sympathize with someone who is knowingly killing themselves? They're big boys and girls they can make their own decisions, I don't have to approve of it.

will not visit Canada :-)
Why would you hurt my feelings? I just feel that sometimes we all make silly decisions about things. Give people a little sympathy.
but i hope that implementation would not last only to smokers...every country should have strict smoke policy how to control this pollution bearing smokes coming from vehicles and factories...

Also they are woking on new rule to imposed ban on people smoking while driving vehicles similar to using mobile phone !

Maybe if someone put as much effort in to spelling correctly, and less effort slagging off smokers, your comments wouldn't seem so stupid!!!!!!!
Herion is an addiction to, but I don't have sympathy for anyone who starts something knowing it's bad for them, knowing it's bad for others, and knowing they will get addicted. If they want to commit slow suicide, then by all means, but don't inflict your stupdity on others.

People who smoke, have an addiction, just like any other. A little sympathy please! I think as long as smokers don't smoke in enclosed spaces, and they follow the No Smoking rules that apply in places, then what's the problem. I feel sorry for people who smoke.
Your car is Hyundai Tuscon right :)
I don't let anyone smoke in my car or house. I used to not actually let people smoke in front of me, but coming here I realized that was a wasted effort.
