The general rules for shipping used cars in India are that the used car which is to be shipped to India should not be older than three years from the date of manufacture of the car. The used car to be shipped to India should definitely have right hand steering and controls besides speedometer to show the speed in kilometer per hour. The shipping cars to India for used cars would be permitted only after custom clearance in Mumbai. Also shipping to India of used cars would require the person to show at least five year documents relating to roadworthiness of the shipped car from the time of shipment to India.

well i wanted to take my nissan pathfinder to india...

nissan cars are not common in india.

there are only 3 models in india....

i dont care abt the petrol consumption.

and i dont think LHD will be a problem.

because i have seen a lots of LHD cars...

if they say that i cannot use LHD for a long period, then i will find some way to make it RHD...

subaru is not there in india.

its true that there a lots of bmw benz audi etc etc....

but all these are expensive..

i want a low cost car with RWD...

petrol car with manual gear box..

You can buy a brand new Nissa X trail in India at around QR 168,000 which is not bad!

1. There will be huge problem parts problem .

2. Also the petrol consumption will be higher since its V6 and that will be a big factor back home. Although you can convert it to a CNG which is around QR 2 per litre while petrol will cost around QR5 per litre.

while a full trim Mahindra Xylo is available in India for QR 70,000:

First: You cannot register a left hand drive car in India, only option to take left hand drives cars to India is through 'carnet' , but this is for a limited period only after which you have to take it back to the country of origin. There are many Range Rovers, FJ cruisers, Land Cruisers in india that are Qatar registered all on 'carnet' option and will be brought back after the time limit expires.

Second: Its only worth taking exclusive cars on carnet since all major brands (lamborghini, ferrari, maserati, bentley, rolls royce, audi,BMW) are sold in india and are spotted regularly on roads.

ITS NOT A GOOD IDEA, ESPECIALLY SINCE IT IS ALTIMA :

- DUTY IS HIGH

- YOUR CAR IS LHD WHERE AS IN INDIA, YOU NEED RHD

- AVAILABILITY OF CAR BRANDS IN INDIA IS VERY GOOD, YOU MAY GET BETTER CHOICES AT CHEAPER RATES

- IT IS NOT POPULAR IN INDIA..THEREFORE, IT WILL BE DIFFICULT TO MAINTAIN AND NOT GOOD FOR RESALE ALSO.

CHANGE YOU IDEA

Yep, friend of mine returned from Mumbai says he can see a lot of BMW's Audi's and Merc's. I suppose these cars are going cheap in India for everyone to be able to afford it.

The cars on Indian roads now..! I am shocked each time I go. You can buy a brand new one with the money you are planning to feed into the pocket of the customs man.

check india custom deptt website for latest rules, they have mentioned it all. They do allow import of self used vehicles in case you are going permanantly, closing RP.

btw, as others say, it's not wise to transfer altima, you can get same kindaa car in same price (used one) considering heavy duty paid at suctom and charges for changing LHD to RHD. However if you have someone known in customs, process may be quite easy.

forget it, you'll be paying through your nose, eyes and whatever other holes you have for customs. For that money you might as well buy a decent car from India itself.

You will not be allowed to import a left hand drive car to India.

There are some who circumvent the customs act by importing vehicles from Japan/RHD vehicles and get charged customs based on rates under transfer of residence (TR) - not aware on those procedures.

You have many posts discussing this matter on QL. Try using Search option or google to look for procedures and customs duty.

In simple terms, its not advisable to ship your car unless you have emotional attachment towards the same and don't bother to spend good amount of time, money and effort behind it.
