SALARY INCREASE!

wmhizon
By wmhizon

Is it ok for an employee to ask their employers for additional salaries or benefits?

Im asking this because i was hired in the Philippines with 2 yrs contract. I agreed for the monthly salary they offered me before because i thought that i will do works based only on my WI (work instruction) & JD (Job description) but it seems that my boss saw that im so good (lol) & i can perform multi tasking jobs. Now his asking me to do jobs that are not intended for me. Instead of asking others (who earning more salaries than me & doing nothing! Ggggrrrrr!!! Yell)  to do it for him, will ask me to do it maybe because i can do it much faster or better than them.

Actually its ok for me to do those extra jobs as long as i can do it. But sometimes those extra jobs eats more of my time and i cant do anything about it because i know it will also affect my performance. Or can i just say "NO" with those extra jobs?

Can i ask for additional salary / benefits from my employer because if this??? Im not asking for too much... but i believed that i should get more than what im earning now...

im working here for 10 mos already do u think its enough time for me to demand for some increase? Or i rather just wait till my employer wake up one morning & realize that i need it? (inshalla)

Or i need to sacrifice for 2 yrs & just look for much better employer? i also hope that they will release me & give me NOC, but what if not?

hi Dandy,

Thanks for the advised but sometimes i really felt that im so abused & over used! To think that some of my officemates earned much better than me for doing nothing... & some of their works are transferred to me but i can not shared my works to them! GGgggggggrrrr!

Sometimes its really hard to show ur potentials here ... because as long as they see that u can do those works well they intend to abused you.

I heard that salary leveling here also depends of ur nationality. Since were working here in middle east they giving better opportunities & higher salaries  for those staff that came from same region even their not that productive. (as per my boss)  and i think that this policy is so unfair!

Is this really observed here in Qatar or its just my boss policies?

(i know little ilokano words kasi ilokano po mother ko.)

just today several of the unproductive employees requested for an increase and granted...however those people who are really "working" were not noticed at all---that includes me...i just want to talk to my boss about this but i have to cool down. i still feel pissed off!

Get all your procedures make then .PDF and try to delete all the .DOC files that you give to them or save in the Server.

You are the owner of this files and if the want to do something with them they must ask you for that, or retype them.

And with this you cover your back because You will the one with the original files...

My Boss asked me to make those things but until now its not implemented since up to now our company still adjusting or whatever. Or maybe theres really something wrong with the management or maybe with my boss!

Evaluation??? My boss didnt know about that! He dont know how to evaluate & managed his own staff.

You could ask for the additional duties to be included in your job description and for the job to be re-evaluated and hopefully regraded.

kabayang wmhizon,

if there is one thing i learned in this part of the world, is that "if you dont ask, you dont get". The problem with us filipinos is yes, we are so timid and shy, it is a good strength in some ways, but is also bad weakness. Its prone to taking-advantage efforts and that kind of attitude is kinda contagious as well. No wonder why in the philippines, even if you work like a horse, you still get peanuts.

as long as you have all the right reasons and justifications to ask for an increase, couple that with the right time for asking, I'm pretty sure you've got no reason to hesitate.

best thing is wait for the next appraissal period, maintaining that same level of work you are doing. keep all emails, praise emails, and any proof of your ood work including your outputs in form of documents or whatever proof.

managers back home, are most upper management sighted, image conscious and insanely performance oriented (maximum output from minimum operational cost). Thats politics, and bureaucracy for you mate! (disregarding the economic state of living of their manpower). I believe thinggs are different here. You get paid on what you work for, and vice versa, you work for what you are paid for. Back home, if you dont work like a horse, and go Home at exactly 5:01, people will stare at you and have a not so good impression. Its a diff ball game here.

But... so much to tell, and again those are traits that are good in some ways but bad at most (specially for the health :) ).

Again, its all about the right proof and justification and the right timing, and im pretty sure you'll get what you need. ;)

In the real world, especially in Qatar, if u dont ask u dont get however pally you are with your supervisors they take you for granted until you open your mouth. Im saying all this since It happened to me and I go a promotion only when I asked.

Alternatively, please read Mathew 20: 1-16, it explains yours and many of our situations.

I will send it to you. but first talk to him

Let him know what`s your plan. and then send him the letter.

As polly says let them know what are you doing from your JD and what are you doing as extras...

Also if you have created a new report, format, document or anything that increase the team performance you can added to the letter so its written what you have done for the company.

After that let me know if its work for you!!! I ask 30% and got 50% plus a training in Malaysia.

Good Luck

kikomodos...i agree with  you. i cant understand why its hard for me to request an increment despite of the wide responsibilities i have. while other nationalities would continuously request for an increase and they are not even productive..or shall i say no improvement on the work performance.

but i tried on several occasions to talk with my boss and he did give me an increment. however its not enough but i say its better than nothing. but if you dont speak...you'll definitely not getting anything.

wmhizon there's nothing wrong to talking to your boss and if he asks why...im sure you have valid reasons. if he says NO make sure you get a valid reason.

Yes, you can!

Filipinos tend to be shy and good-natured, kind-hearted and does not want to offend anyone even to the point of asking, just simply asking for what yo think is due to you for the many more things you are now handling in your job.

But, be tactful. Know the right timing and the right words. Pretty soon, you'll have the raise you want.

I understand and sympathise with you fully . I think it is your right to ask for a salary hike. When do you get evaluated - 6 monthly or yearly ?

If  you wait for your next evaluation , then if you feel you have not been evaluated adequately , speak up and you can go further at this time and ask for a hike.

A friendly suggestion - make sure that you perform duties which are given on your job description first and only do extra jobs if you have the spare time ,or else when you get evaluated, there will be nothing to show to get evaluated upon.

It is usual here to ask people who do well at jobs to do a little extra and then some more. Some people have the guts to say , thats not in my job description , but most especially those from South East Asia and China, don't do this , so they are taken advantage of .

Try to make them appreciate your extra work, otherwise, refuse to do it

Yea sure. If you think your salary isnt enough then sure. But if u spend all ur salary at shopping within one day, then that would be a problem lol.
