Residency Test for Dubai

Gypsy
By Gypsy

Ok, I'm not sure how much truth there is in this as I heard it on QBS last night and can't seem to find any articles about it, BUT, apprantely Dubai is passing a law requiring anyone applying for residency to pass a cultural awareness test.

What says you? Good idea or Bad?

johnpur,

That is so true!!!!!!!

LOL oh like that :p still doesnt change the fact that its going to do them any good..those that want to break the law will still do it. U think we are not aware of what the laws are here in Qatar? wat the culture is? these people just have no better work to do.

citizen.

I found this on the website....

"There is an incredible residency opportunity in Dubai, U.A.E., which is offered for the very first time on the Internet. After conducting our personal due diligence, we've given a BIG thumbs up and placed our stamp of approval on this rare residency program.

This 14,100 plus word, 45 page newly revised and expanded report will answer all your questions. We would propose for a number of reasons you entertain our Dubai Tax Free Resident Investor Report. Some of the reasons for this are:

1. The ability to easily start their own business.

2. Minimum amount of time required per year to be there

3. The fact that the program is pre-approved by the government

4. Unrestricted. Applicant and family members may work at their own business.

5. Favorable Tax and Extradition laws

6. Applicant can sponsor for residency his entire family, including spouse and children up to 18 years old.

7. Cost as little as $19,000 for a family of four.

8. Dubai is 100% TAX FREE. No taxes to be paid at all.."

And if its the same as Bahrain, yer dont need a work visa, just so much cash in the bank and a means to keep that limit.Thats all. No mention of work.

We are only temporary guests, not full time residents.

Oh, and Im not drunk yet :)

Give me a break, no one really cares about the culture, the labourers dont, the waiters dont, the plumbers dont, heck neither do any of the 30k plus salary package expats. So how does answering what is the national flag of the country or whats the national religion help change that? Esp for someone who's never experienced the middle east before?

Its only after you live in the country will u actually learn how to deal with local customs and practices.

We have a test in the UK, to try to make sure the people who are there have some understanding of the country they want to be in.

Wether it works or not is a different topic altogether.

Gypsy obviously you want to disagree else how will the discussion go forward :P

I didnt say we should be exempted from the rule however why should someone know these basic things to obtain a WORK visa? What does it prove? Will it be any gain in the quality of people they hire to work? Will it change the way the people will behave after they get into the country? Snakes dont wag their tails like dogs if you know what i mean. Useless rule in my opinion.

Expats applying for residency in the UAE will be tested on their knowledge of local cultures and traditions, the Federal National Council said on Monday, adding further hurdles for foreigners planning to work in the oil-rich nation.

"Too many people don't know anything about our culture - there are many nationalities - and every resident needs to know something about this country," Ahmed Shabeeb al-Dhahiri, first deputy speaker of the Federal National Council, told UAE daily Khaleej Times.

Expatriates account for more than 80 percent of the population of the UAE, which relies on foreign workers to fuel its economy.

But the number of expats is predicted to decrease as people working in construction and real estate lose their jobs and return home.

Dhanin said a committee, which will be made up of members of various ministries, would be set up by October to create strategies to improve expats' understanding of the country, the newspaper reported on Tuesday.

He said the series of questions would be "easy" but that applicants would have to pass in order to get their residency visa.

The test will include questions like "what is the country's official religion?" and "what is the country's flag?".

The test, while apparently easy, is the latest in a line of hurdles being created as the UAE attempts to regain its national identity, and could discourage people from moving to the country. The newspaper did not say whether current expat residents would be expected to sit the exam.

Last week, the UAE announced expats must earn a minimum monthly salary of 10,000 dirhams ($2,724), up from 6,000 dirhams previously, if they are to be able to bring their families over to live.

Those cultural awareness tests are usually for those who are applying for nationality.

Maybe the UAE is now considering giving nationality to their foreign residents, to compensating the exodus of the latest month! Could it be the case?

By Gypsy• 8 Jul 2009 09:25
Gypsy

LOL. Personally if it's true I think it's a good idea. They've had some issues lately with cultural inappropriateness, so maybe this could help things.

Question #2: When you're being ruthlessly tortured by a local Sheikh do you:

A) Tell the police

B) Tell your family & friends

or

C) Just shut up and take it like a man! (and get someone to record it on their cellphone for blackmail purposes)

By GodFather.• 8 Jul 2009 09:22

So question number one is..

Q..What is the national ride of UAE..

If you answered Landcruiser you will be wrong.. It is the Camel..lol :)
