Residence Visa, please Help

Hi guys,

If I am on visit visa, how long does it usually take to switch it to a residence visa?

While
in the process of optaining my residence visa, can I rent an apartment,
open a bank account , and buy a car while I am on visit visa? will a
letter from the company and a copy of my passport be enough to do so?
or do I have to wait until I have the residence visa ID.

All answers and advices highly appreciated .
