Thanks for your hard work and best wishes to Qatar Happening.

Content and programming issues aside,  I think it's a pretty groovy site.

The design is slick and user friendly......content is something that can come at a later date....plenty of time for that......the only thing is I would never register, as I refuse to give my mobile number out on any site. Maybe that's just me.

That's a shame. I was hoping for reviews rather than promotions. It's a pity we live in a place where people are too scared to speak out honestly for fear of upsetting someone.

 

If event information is your selling point than that makes QH a competitor to QL ;-)

Well, I for one cannot write a negative review, it would burn too many bridges in Doha (this community is too small) BUT the Have your Say feature allows everyone else to review the restaurant too, and you can say whatever you like as long as you don't mention alcohol or curse. 

 

And really I don't think the content is the main reason to go back to the site, I think its the event information.

Gypsy - I for one will check the site in the future with the hope of finding new content, but unfortunately I think I'll be in the minority as most visitors will decide whether to return based on what they find initially, which currently isn't a huge amount of content. I hope to be proved wrong though.

One quick query - will restaurant reviews actually be reviews, or merely adverts? I'm sick and tied of reading so called reviews in various publications which end up only saying good things about the restaurants. No restaurant is perfect, and some are damn right awful, but I've rarely seen a review come out and make criticisms!

 Content will come as the site continues to grow.  This site is linked with the magazine, so you'll see lots more come up every month.  Just today and yesterday I added a dozen more events, a scrapbook and will be adding new cinema times in the next hour or so.

I think the site has been launched to soon. People make very quick judgements when browsing the internet, and if a site doesn't grab them within the first minute or so it is unlikely they'll return to it in the future. I think it would have been better to wait until there was significantly more content available before going live.

It's a shame because Gypsy has clearly put a lot of time and effort into it, and it does look like it has the potential to be a useful site (despite the html flaws and choppy scrolling!).

Gosh I always thought I was a critical person.. But you guys surpass even me.

 

Great to have good feedback.. But try to remember it is a new site and still very much a work in progress. TBH I think its excellent  for just coming online!

p.s. I will be with you gypsy about why their is suffering in the world in the other thread today or tommorrow. So keep checking ;)

Gypsy, the html errors and the buggy javascript wouldn't be a problem if you had some content on the site. For example, the music section seems to be completely empty:

 Not looking just for praise Ngourlay, just informing you that you are so far the only person who has complained of site errors, therefore, perhaps you should check your computer.

If you only want praise, then you should say so in your topic. It's just that you asked for the errors, and said that you'd had no problems with safari.

I know that the version of safari on this machine is a bit buggy, but it's the first time it's crashed like that for me. The problems with firefox show that you have problems that affect more than one browser. If I were you, I'd sort out the invalid HTML and replace the javascript.

Bear in mind that it's a lot easier to sort out these problems now when hardly anyone is using the site than in six months when you have regular visitors.

However, posting the same topic three times to QL is bound to annoy people. You shouldn't get shirty about it - you'd be the first to complain if it was another company doing the spamming.

Qatar Visitor has been slowly building up the articles about Qatar, and is now a pretty good source of local information. Qatar Living has been running events listings for ages, so your site will directly compete against QL. You only have to go back to the early QL nodes to see that this site started out doing exactly what you are trying - reviews and local information. I'm sure that Marhaba, Dar Al Sharq and the rest are building sites that do exactly the same thing.

Saddavi there is a difference between actual content and presentation of content.

As journalists my opinion is to go for quality not quantity esp with a new venture.... get the details right and rest will fall in to place.

if you produce lots and there are mistakes there is more to correct....fine tune at the beginning is a lot easier than mopping up at the end.

 

Now i want u to send me some pictures of Talal no 15 so I can make my fridge calendar for April. :)

but the color scheme is a little off for my taste... but not bad...

 

the only real draw back i see on your site is the scrolling text is very very choppy... 

 

the content its self is good though and helpfull...

If you pay someone to build a site, you should at least write into the contract that they use valid HTML. An easy way to tell whether your site will work on a variety of current and future browsers is to use the validator from W3C:

Another problem with the site is that it's using some really poor javascript to do the scrolling text and rollovers. I don't really like that sort of thing, but if you're going to use those effects, you should use javascript libraries that have been thoroughly tested and debugged, such as jQuery or Prototype.

It looks great. With more work it will soon be filled with important and interesting info. 

In fact you can partner with QL and merge the best of the 2 sites. Or at least refer to each other under "Related Links".

The design is really good, attractive and user friendly.

 

However there are so many spelling and grammar errors it renders it amateur and jarring to read.

As are all newspapers and magazines produced here.

It is not as bad as the Qatar Tribune or Stadium.

I have actually given up reading the Stadium it upset my coffee drinking too much.

For those of you who believe 'spelling doesn't matter' it does. If someone makes writing/journalism their profession they need to hone their skills like any craftsperson.

 Please find a decent editor who proof reads work. 

Also this is not a personal attack by any means but just continued frustration at the low standards of editing in Qatar.

 

Also in your events calendar you may wish to include football and other sports fixtures such as international football matches. For example yesterday Qatar v Jordan.

 

 It is subscribed to by the big corporates, what they do with it isn't up to us, but they do give it to some of thier new employees.  We do try for cross sectional news, but the problem in Doha is that most people (outside of the big hotels who understand things like deadlines) are incapable of getting their information to us in time for print.  Calling me up on the 15th of March and asking if you can get into the March issue, doesn't in anyway help us or you.
