Qatar looks for East European maids

Good old joe
By Good old joe

Qatar is taking a closer look at the possibility of recruiting housemaids from some East European countries such as Macedonia, Armenia and Bosnia-Herzegovina, Al Sharq reported yesterday quoting unnamed sources at the Ministry of Labour.

The idea is to diversify the markets that supply maids and other domestic helpers to Qatar and break the monopoly of some major manpower exporting countries, the daily said.

Other new countries that are on the shortlist of the labour ministry to explore recruitment of household helpers include Cambodia and Bangladesh in Asia, and Tanzania, Mauritius and Kenya in Africa.

My grandmother and mother always taught me if you want something done correctly, do it yourself. I am from the US, married to a Gulf national for nearly 20 yrs. Maids have their own agendas, trust me. I am a doormat because I'm horrible at setting boundaries and being strick with them.

Ironically, the country we live in is obese as well, which brings me to my own personal solution. If possible, do what you can yourself. I literally sweat everyday from cleaning. It is a free workout and my body reflects it. My friend came over and said, I have maids, you do not, and your house is cleaner than mine.

No judging, and guess what, you save money too. Not only salary and acquiring a maid. Currently, it's $3,000 to hire a full timer.

Thank you for allowing me to share here.

Some if you guys are really funny and I laughed out loud.

Now, I'm dawning the beats headphones, and cleaning my little heart out for the next 3 hours.

Imve experienced maids taking checkbooks, putting ants in our rice, sitting on f/b all day, discovering my maid with my driver in my bed and one loosened the valve behind my washer at 4:30 am, causing the filter to continuously run out into 3 main rooms. I saw tides of measurable gushing floods inside my house.

You cannot pay someone to care. Remember, they have young children too that they've had to entrust to others as they leave their country to 'survive' financially. And, in spite of what's being done here to us, it pales in comparison to what their children endure.

Peace~

One of the reasons the salary of filipina maids has gone up is because the filipino peso has gotten alot stronger against all the gulf currencies (which are pegged to the dollar) and as such the money they were sending back each month seemed to become less and less.

Brit.. the Armenian makes sense ... while Latvian doesnt...due to the Money Exchange Rates

1.00 QAR=0.146 Latvian Lat

1.00 QAR=29.36 Albanian Lek

1.00 QAR=110.84 Armenian Dram

It will slowly become a status symbol to have a Armenian maid...lol

Why would Eastern European maids come here when I am sure many of them are working in Western Europe for much higher salaries than they would get her.

On a side note, many Eastern European girls are rather good looking!

By anonymous• 9 Dec 2012 14:31

Dude, they won't stop fantasizing, will they?

While economic situation is crappy in Bosnia, I reckon that very few would go as far as Qatar for 700QR/month. Sorry to disappoint you, man-abuse agencies.

And, in general, it is an absolute disgrace that maids, drivers, and blue collar workers - whether from Indonesia, Sri Lanka, or elsewhere - in general are paid so low and so exposed to flagrant abuse. And to have temerity to still talk about "breaking monopoly" of the aforementioned countries (implying that these people are getting a better deal than they should) is shameful. This is vapid capitalism at its worst.

Polish maids in the UK may be getting crappy deal monetarily as well (400GBP is not much at all!), but at least their salaries are normally paid on time and their work status is not tied to their "sponsor."

Qatar, is keen to tap countries such as Bosnia-Herzegovina, Macedonia and Armenia in Eastern Europe, Tanzania, Mauritius and Kenya in Africa, and Bangladesh, Cambodia and Vietnam in Asia, to recruit domestic helpers.

Manpower agencies have been given the hope that maids could be brought from these countries on monthly wages ranging between QR700 and QR800.

Moreover, they add that they doubt if European women would be willing to work in Qatar given the low wages and typical working conditions and Qatari culture and traditions.

Don't forget that costs of living here are way higher! Housemaids at least have free food/free accommodation too!

However, I am with the rise of the salary for maids to QR1500!

Asian countries will be thankful to Qatar for their action as most of the asian women who come here are exploited both in their own country as well as in Qatar. Note that more than 50% of them don't get a single penny of their income when they return home in their old age because the agents take it all away.Good decision Qatar & secondly, if they employ east european, they will learn to respect domestic help because these maids will definitely not tolerate any kind of ill treatment.
