Qatar Living is Dying

adey
By adey

Over the past month or so Qatar Living has been neutered; no longer are there robust exchanges of views, heated or not, gone are the witticisms of word play, no more are there posts about fundamental issues affecting everyday life in Qatar, and the paucity of anything that makes the little grey cells tick over screams hollow like the wind in a deserted post-apocalyptic dystopian city.
In short QL is dying.
What has replaced a once interesting and informative site is a poor mans 'Twitter' for the hard of understanding, a mono-syllabic exchange of inanities, text-speak junkies and those that spout platitudes, hackneyed sayings and trite phrases as if they come from some deep well of divine truth that are the answer to all questions instead of using some thought.
So who is to blame?
Well undoubtedly the slew of new posters who conform to the description above but also those that feel it is against their 'human rights' not to be offended and cry to mummy (the mods) every time their precious feelings are hurt. And the mods seem to play to their insecurities and appear to revel in their new found power to be our new moral guardians. This has the effect of diluting this site to cater for the lowest common denominator, something the powers that be find very comforting, 'safe' and 'peaceful'.
In short, the erosion of the freedom of speech on this site has led many to abandon it leaving it a husk of what it once was.....it's now a shadow of itself taken over by those that are happy to live in a fuzzy pink world where nothing is allowed to disturb the quite numbing banality that this site is becoming - Mogadon online.
Let's bring back the lively debates that were keenly fought and where joyously intelligent insults were thrown; let's have no more of the banal posts full of crude, neantherdal, illiterate abuse.

Mods please take note.

Thank you for your time.

When is QL going to die? And when is the funeral?

who says qatarliving is dying? there are bajjuus and sonams and then thre are rizks and rmz and then some good souls and saints still ruling. I have been around for an year or so and find only a few missing. But certainly there is no food for the likes of adey and tallg anymore...

Amoud glad to be of service if I helped prove your point.

Some stupid comments can be edited by the Mods Alexa but if you start a good thread then it will get more good responses than the bad ones, just what I am thinking..

Well it does happen and it's tedious.

On a lighter note, I love the furious posts from soemone whose wife as lost her wallet and, oooo shock horror it was probably stolen! Where I come from you can't even report that to the Police anymore and here we are in a one city country where if you lose your wallet you can alert about half the population on one website. (and it was probably the maid).

This is a tiny place that doesn't represent real life for most of us. It's the reason a lot of us are here in the first place. QL is too small if anything, I agree that there should be lots of forums in different languages and for different interests. Excluding Expat Woman which is not my cup of tea at all, what else is there?

On balance, this website has enriched my life, especially through the days when I didn't work full time and had the choice between reading about wayward maids and the highly original why all arabs have landcruiser or the reality of my days spent drinking coffee and listening to childbirth stories.

Jasmine, I havent seen many "perfectly reasonable" questions getting a troll alert unless someone was taking the piss.

The worst part of QL now is posters trying to dazzle the masses with their sharp wit and savage retorts. Its old, boring and adds nothing to the conversation.

Amoud your post appears to me as if you are really moaning and complaining..

That's the point 100 % of the posts will never suit 100 % of the users..

I am tired of hearing it since I joined, what great topics we used to discuss 2 years ago, well why don't you guys post the same type of topics today.. I haven't yet seen any of you posting any new topic but I have seen you guys complaining on countless threads that there were such nice topics two years back...

I mean comeon, you make me laugh... You want someone else to change things as per your specifications????

I thought you are too old for me to tell you this but if you want to change something, you better do it yourself..

Now you guys can post about how I have poisoned the environment and how I am a troll since I am a new user because I know by now that you will not start any new topic worth discussing but will just wonder about the golden days, whenever and whatever they were...

Yes, all nationalities are part of this site, some are active some are not, where is the problem? As for the Islamliving.com, please copy the link for the latest thread on Islam, I dare say NONE!

One striking observation I'd like to draw attention to, is that I find a good number of self-expression activists, are the same ones who're so irritated, edgy, phobic, jumpy and fanatic when someone speaks against their own ideology.

I don't know why some people are finding it hard to comprehend that QL was earlier a very small community so you knew everyone else personally, that helps to appreciate each other's views. Now it is a much bigger community with thousands of users, so its that much harder for everyone to get along. You all think about the good old days and want QL to go back to those times, so that means you are not happy with the progress and growth QL has seen?? If you are not happy with QL's growth then why do you claim to love QL here?

Alexa, don't be so cynical.. Qatar Living is not only India, Paki and Philippines.

India, Pak and Phillipino has so much population that they are now everywhere! Not only in QL. But quantity alone doesn't count. Quality matters too. We may be the majority in terms of populace but I believe in terms of Quality (of the posts) you can still hold your own if you want.

Well I read your comments and I am not sure but this site I think should be more about people living in Qatar and their countries and their cultures. I want to learn about other cultures and if I don't do it in a place like Doha which is a melting pot of so many different cultures then I am never going to do it. Since in real life I am mostly with my country men, virtual world offers me an ideal platform to do that.

Some of the threads may appear stupid but it does give an insight into the minds of the people from that cultural background. Ofcourse we can never generalise and think all of them think this way but it does tell me that some people with that kind of thinking live in those parts..

Sorry for butting in as a newbie as I think this was a thread for older members who knew what this site was like earlier..

I don't mind Good Morning, Happy Birthday, How is the mood? Algeria or Egypt? Your car color threads, QL has been helping many members connect personally or online. Networking through QL groups helped many bored lonely loners, don't deny them that right, to wake in the morning and find someone to talk to, without them, there would be no QL.

And I'm also not with voices suggesting subscribing with a formal email address (...gov.qa or similar ones), although I'm sure we're already known to QL admin, and our PM feature is not as private as the name suggests.

I like the diversity and scoops of QL and not denying it gets dull for long weeks.

Stay selective and/or post your own topics.

You're very right Qatar Living needs to focus on Qatar related topics, as used to be, but there is a downside to being regular on a forum, we get to a point where we feel we've seen and read it all, and that's exactly when most of us make fun of questions asked by newcomers, not to mention wanting to steer discussions.

Qatarizing QL shouldn't be difficult, either QL admin need to invite more Qataris here, or they need to post themselves, as Qatari and Ahmad do every now and then, cultural topics about Qatar.

Obviously is that Qatarliving should be about topics from or about Qatar. Now deleting stupid pointless argumentative topics would go a long way to solving the problems of this site.

I have no doubt that the readership and numbers who visit the site would fall dramatically but that's a good thing as trolls and others would find a better outlet for their verbal diarrhoea.

The site would then regain it's base and become a talking shop about Qatar once more.

To be honest I thought the modding on expat woman was harsh but it makes perfect sense, people can go there and find quality information about the region they are in. They can ask questions without being shouted down and stupid or already asked questions and forums are removed immediately.

Qatarliving should have enacted this policy years ago, as it is now the site is worth noting as it's clear the mental capacity of most of the regular posters is not worth shelling out for.

The site is full of nut's, zealots, misogynists, idiots and proles (look it up)

If the site had maintained it's edge and been more organised it would be worth something, as it is now anymore could easily set something similar up as has been seen with a popular car advertising website and I am sure it would be very easy to set up a simple but very effective real estate web site.

In fact one of the easiest ways to clean up the classifieds is to demand a PICTURE of the product. If the person is incapable of taking and uploading a picture in the 21st Century then the person is not worth dealing with and the product he has to sell isn't worth going to see.

Perhaps I shall do this myself.

Been a mostly passive member for only a few month but even I can see the difference (mostly for the worse) of QL then and now.

It is much harder to extract useful information in QL nowadays. No, I'm not too bothered with the religious discussion as I barely notice it. What I think choking the airways is the endless streams of irrelevant and dare I say childish post such as the long vs short, true love vs whatever and all of those kind . May be the author just want recognition of being a popular thread starter or may be I'm simply too old to participate in such discussion......

Cheers

removed for the first time just because I called verisimilitude a part of the human anatomy.

The words were already censored yet I had a private message telling me the language was not acceptable.

Now in the old days you could call anyone what you wanted, insert a few asterisks and you could make your point as strongly as you wanted.

Now I want to insult verisimilitude I think his comments above do sum up the attitude now on QL.

I can understand now why people are upset. Personally if this was my forum I would have it unmoderated, if people felt insulted by someone or something then that's not a bad thing hopefully they would go somewhere else.

That's the strange thing about people here, they become insulted by some "slight" then continue to moan and moan and try and get people and posts removed. Why can't these same people go and find sites that cater to their views.

After all if I was really after religious indoctrination or page after page of tedious back and forths about certain verses chapter and books then I am SURE I could find thousands of site just for me.

I just don't understand why they bother here.

If this was my site I would simply delete ANY post that didn't contain the words "IN QATAR" as that's what the site is about. If it's not about Qatar then it's off topic and should be deleted.

I am surprised as tallg mentions that someone has not created a better web site, I have certainly thought that it could be done. I think the classified section on this site needs A LOT OF WORK, if the mods spent as much time clearing up that mess as they do half heartedly messing up the forums then this site might actually become useful again.

By tallg• 3 Nov 2009 14:18

QL has always been a big pile of rubbish with a very few gems of useful information hidden within it. And EVERYONE has contributed to it being a pile of rubbish - religious freaks, constant moaners, gossip merchants, debaters, trolls, lovers, haters, moderators, admins, owners etc etc. Half the problem is that people don't see that they are actually part of the problem themselves.

But having said all that, there are still way more users here than on any of the similar sites in Qatar. I'm still shocked that no-one has managed to come along and make a QL-beater. It really wouldn't be hard.

For me, the main problem was always that it's not really QATAR Living. There are too many stories that have nothing to with Qatar, which have clogged up the forums. But that's probably more of a reflection on the lack of stories to post about Qatar.

Unfortunately the owners have very busy day jobs and aren't able to devote the time needed to keep the site running smoothly, and moderation has become messy over the last couple of years. But even if that wasn't the case, I don't think it would really change the face of QL.

I still pop in to read every now and then, but I hardly ever post since QL became over run with religious zealots.

I see it this way. The mods want to create a QL that suits a certain type of person, and that type of person doesn't include people like me, so I mostly ignore the site these days. And there are lots of site similar to QL where I spend more time now, where there aren't as many religious nutters running around.

The QL mods like having "these" people on the site - that's why they have allowed them to take over. I honestly don't think QL wants to be the QL it was famous for in the past. It used to be all about Qatar and living here (funny that) but now it's just where people go to preach religion or pick fights.

but even with a larger community, things CAN be handled better. Seriously...just in watching what has been going on, certain viewpoints get wiped off the board while others who go WAY out of line, are left up.

Some of the conversations from 2 years ago would get silly, some would get argumentative, but sometimes in this country, you needed that, just to know you were still alive and not buried in the sand up to your neck. heck..even Airsupply would get everyone's blood pressure up for a few minutes..then everyone would laugh it off, consider where/who it was coming from, hope he got back on his medications, and we'd all go on with life.

Nowdays..seems you can't say what is on your mind without someone jumping down your throat and telling you you are wrong even before the words are OUT of your mouth. Some religions are ok to get bashed but say a word about another one(even innocently) and you are cursed up one side and down the other. Intolerance is just wrong...and its not worth the effort to deal with it when you don't have to.

2 years back, when QL was a smaller community, it was a whole lot better and calmer, we had lovely lengthy discussions, but there were still tiffs and heated arguments. I'v always expected the worst, with the growing number of members.

On the other hand, I've been lucky to have met authentic good friends on QL, quite enough for me. I still consider QL as "Qatar Eye".

This just goes to show you how the mods(and the radicals) have changed QL...Versi is in AGREEMENT with the mods!!! Whoa..what a 180 degree switch THAT is! Could it basically be because he's now getting molly coddled and not banned as he always was, over and over again??

I agree with you Adey...QL is dying. Its not got the mental stimulation it once had. The people who made it a really interesting place to come, have left or at the very most, are in reading mode. If I wanted baby food, I'd go to the grocery store.

Personally, I stopped coming to this site because of all the religious hatred and arguements that was a daily occurrance. There was no respect given to each other...only ONE was right(I shall remain silent on which one that was, ahem), no matter what, but they certainly would be the ones to very QUICKLY tell the others how their religion was SUPPOSED to be done, even tho they had no clue but only believed in what propaganda told them. 99% of the time even THAT made me laugh because it was so far off the mark that it was hilarious to hear what they thought the other religion did. some nationals slamming other nations really got VERY old...seemed some countries were fair game while others couldn't be touched.

Then I just got busy with other things and never came back except to check my messages....Odd how you still get PMs asking to be added as friends, even though you haven't posted in over 3 months!!

So...following advice given by MY religion...I'm turning the other cheek and going elsewhere to find interesting people to talk to...and still hang out with my friends that I've made from here over 2 years ago...

Stealth...as far as you said some of our friends got banned...none of mine have...so I'm guessing it must have been yours that did.

There WAS no Mafia...and if you thought there was...then hope the paranoia goes away without medication, and the voices in your head have stopped speaking to you.

Olive...you're right hon...

in the end...respect begets respect. Pretty simple.

Right... some people would consider the Whitehouse to be a revered institution... and it should not be the target of 'tasteless and baseless' attacks... however if it is criticism based on facts and sound logic, then its constructive...

I believe one of the many reasons; Why QL is dying out?

1-It is because like many internet marketing business is suffering from the bad economic recession.

2-The bathing bars of 'Soap and Operas in QL' dissolve too quickly in the polluted waters of Changes Rivers all the time. No chance to kill the bad germs of the internet.

3-In Accord with the medical authorities, there is not enough Swine flu shots for everyone. Everyone is running to the mountains instead of QL.

4-Boredom is a common denominator lately in QL.

5- The Leadership is at the lowest point with QL.

Life is short. Break all the rules. Forgive quickly.

Kiss slowly, love truly and never regret the things that

made you laugh.

Genuine point adey...

I have been noticing for quite sometime many ridiculous and totally irrelevant threads posted focusing mainly on racial discriminantion and abuse. If we categorize the quality of threads posted, some posts are really atrocious and blot on the landscape to the reader; I agree that some are informative and pertinent and often result in good fun. There is no genuine discussion ongoing although the topic has valid points.

Yes, QL is exhibiting shadows of deterioration and requires some recovery plan to be more informative and consistent...

I think the MODs are doing a great job

We can do without the tasteless and baseless attack of revered institutions out of which certain people seem to derive great pleasure...

And they justify it with 'freedom of expression'...

People need to focus on achieving something constructive out of their freedom of expression rather than using it as a means to spew their venom...

At the end of the day who cares, these sites come and go and in 5/10/20 years who will really miss it?

Yahoo used to be the no.1 search engineer, IBM the biggest manufacture of PCs, Netscape had the whole brower market at one time, plus many more. Who really cares that they don't use these services now?

Best thing Qatari could do now like an investor on the Pearl is sell it on for a lot of money while the advertising is still coming in and get what he can for it.

I like it that no one wants to claim partial reasonability! very reactive and lazy. Why don't you all start posting threads of your liking and start a "new" mainstream of sound debates and healthy discussions, maybe because most of you are unable to?

Each QLer is part of the problem and the solution.

I doubt Qatarliving will die. I think the issue is that the website has "evolved" with the country and mirrors what is happening in the country at large.

When the site was smaller you had a better representation of all groups and generally you could have a discussion and have equal representation from all sides.

Now the site is heavily swayed in one direction. And as everyone knows, there's nothing more dangerous than a mob of the righteous. They feel that they are the only voice and that they own the site. Their sound is deafening and since they're in the majority they don't want to or need to listen to anyone else's voice and they've cowed the mods into doing what they want.

Long live the minority I say.

I actually have no clue what all this other fuss is about on here as I don't actually visit or read many threads.

In the old days you could wind people up for days on end about religion or some other rubbish and people would all go mental and it was quite good fun.

I can't be bothered to do that nowadays.

To be honest the less I hear and know and think about Qatar the better, I really don't like being reminded of all the small mindedness that goes on here so not reading this site helps that. So i probably should not post any more too huh :)

I consider QL, all in all, as a positive initiative. QL's goal is noble, let's remember this isn't a chat website, it is serving as a permanent database and is documenting a lot of unknown aspects about Qatar.

Yes, there are other similar initiatives, and I salute them all because Qatar needs all of them.

Don't often agree with most people on this site but frankly it's hey day was about 18 months ago when there seemed to be sensible vigorous debate.

To be honest now it's only really useful for the classifieds and even that's prone to abuse.

It made it to 4 years old so that in it's self is to be congratulated but to be honest I am pretty sure if you deleted the forum and kept the classified section just about as many people would visit.

xxxxxxxxx.com also has a MUCH better property section where people actually seem to be able to post photos.

I have to say this if you are an agent and you can't even post a picture on the internet you are a moron of the highest order and I WILL NEVER RING YOU ABOUT A PROPERTY. As I imagine mobile phones probably worry u in their complexity.

Well Said Adey, I really appreciate it.But I'm not sure how many of them are REALLY willing to stop hijacking threads or seeing it as just another chatter box. That may be because of the connections and friendships most of 'em enjoy through this "virtual" platform, where one loves his best friends' MASK rather than the real him or her. Anyways, I guess, may be we should think about the possibilities of a chat box too.

Just my opinion!

---If you can't CONVINCE 'em, CONFUSE 'em!!!

By adey• 31 Oct 2009 21:46
adey

Well, and this is my opinion only, the mods are too quick to remove or delete posts on any whim -they are playing it safe in case, gawd forbid, that any little sensitive souls get their feelings bruised.

There are enough people on here who can beat down the 'haters' with reasoned, well crafted and bullsh*t cutting arguments.....we don't need mods censoring what THEY think is too disturbing for MY delicate ears.

We do a better job of putting those people in their place than the mods because they always lose the argument, by deleting threads they are given the impression that they have won and can only be silenced by censorship. Once someone has their post censored it builds resentment and they keep coming back with the same crap.

Basically censorship leads to mediocre sites.
