Qatar changes car number plates..........

Qatar's traffic department has started changing the number plates of vehicles in a process expected to take one year.
All new vehicles will be have the European modeled plates while those in circulation will receive them upon renewal of their roads permits, Qatari daily Al Raya reported on Friday. The new plates will carry the white and maroon colours of the Qatari flag.
The change of the plates is in line with a decision taken by Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) traffic officials to unify their specifications.
According to the daily, the officials agreed to take the European plates as a model on the basis that it allows the clear reading of the numbers from a distance.
Qatar's plates initially had a black background and white or silver lettering before they were changed in 1982 when the background was made white. In 1998, Arabic numbers were added to the plates.

I just received text from metrash instructing me to report to "Al Duhail" to change my plate. No mention of any office or street just "Al Duhail"

Does anybody know specifically where in Al Duhail changing of plates is made? the place is huge in google map, there is Al Duhail South, Al Duhail North, etc

and I'm not aware there is traffic department in Al-Duhail. The one I know is in Madinat Khalifa.

Help please to those who have changed plates in Al Duhail? Is it the same as Madinat Khalifa Traffic Dept?

Thanks

The new Qatari car plates. You can only get them when you renew your car license (Istimara), or when you get a new car.[[wysiwyg_imageupload:6414:]]   [[wysiwyg_imageupload:6415:]]     [[wysiwyg_imageupload:6416:]]

the arabs starting in the 7th century, translated all kind of materials and sciences from all reachable civilisations. mainly from greek, byzance, ptolemaic-egypt, persia and india.

why they adopted the hindi numbers ?

because hindi math was by far the most advanced of these civilisations, with the pivotal and decisive discovery and incontournable use of the ZERO, decimal fractions, and negative numbers.

- zero may not have been invented in india (khmer civilisation?)but it's via india that arabs adopted it

nice question. i don't know ! but i can make logical historic guesses:

- the arabs spread the western arabic numerals via andalus and sicily to europe (al-kindi, al khawarizmi around 825-830) but in 952 (uqlidisi, and ibn Ali)adopted the eastern hindu-arabic numerals that include the notion of decimal fractions.

- from the start the arabs used the eastern arabic numerals; the distinctive West Arabic variant begins to emerge around the 10th century in the Andalus.

why do the West use Arabic numbers, LP?

LP, maybe cause they stem from the same race or something? :-/ I am lost too.

Plus english numerals are easy to be OCRed. Just think how much trouble it would save us from the Doha Airport's Premium terminal parking. Last time they OCRed number 8 as number 2 and then stopped me at the gate because one of digits of my cars plate didnt match with the number on their screen :-P

Does anybody know why the Arabs use Hindi numbers?

it is a good move. in the current hindu-arabic numerals, the zero is almost invisible, and it's hard to differenciate between the 2 and 3, 2 and 6, and 6 and nine. arabic numerals used in europe are better.
