A Muslim Only "Facebook"

Why do I think this will be a complete disaster?

A new social networking site aimed at Muslims is to be launched, with its founders insisting it will be strictly policed to avoid offending members.

Creators of Salamworld, which is due to go live during Ramadan, aim to have 50 million users on their facebook rival within five years.

Salamworld’s communications director, Said Sadov, told 7DAYS that topics such as homosexuality and other practices forbidden in Muslim culture will not be permitted on the site but that religiously-sensitive discussions will be allowed. An estimated 300 million Muslims regularly surf the internet.

“This is the very reason for Salamworld. Many Muslims say they feel intimidated by such groups on facebook and other social network sites. They want their own space free from such groups, but that is not to say that gay Muslims can’t stay on facebook. It’s up to them, but such groups won’t have a place on Salamworld,” he said.

Sadov added a panel of renowned Islamic scholars will decide what will be allowed on the site so that Muslims feel comfortable when they log on.

Sadov vowed it would not stop honest discussion on topics such as evolution, which may be opposed by some Muslims. “Maybe some people will say we came from the apes, others will say back that we did not, as long as they don’t insult each other, I think that will be acceptable,” he added.

But Abdul Latif Al Sayegh, chairman of the Al Sayegh Media Group in the UAE, said he believes facebook is too big to be easily replaced by a site that is segregated by religion or locality.

“People can still practise their religion on facebook,” he said. “You are the one who decides who your facebook friends are, so you can easily avoid subjects you find offensive. Unless they come up with a totally unique product, I don’t think it will work.”

Salamworld is currently based in Istanbul but its creators are searching for a Gulf headquarters in Abu Dhabi or Dubai. Executives are to fly to the Emirates next month to meet with the authorities.

I dont understand homosexuality but I accept it is in society and I don't discriminate against a person because they are gay.

Why not? If it makes you more comfortable.

By zirkwander• 8 Mar 2012 14:06

I don't get the point why people can't just learn how to accept the existence of homosexuals in the society. It's not the religion difference that divides nations but it's the LACK OF RESPECT to one another.

Well, given that one of the biggest complaints about facebook that I hear from Muslims is that it allows men and women to fraternize, I wonder how this website will stop that?

Master UBC...

Im sure if a 'gay person' was brought up in a religion and believes in it. They are still entitled to have a religion.

"it mention in the article about "gay muslim" i thought this is not allowed in the Muslim"

Muslims are human beings.....being Muslim doesn't cure homosexuality. Its forbidden however and not accepted in the Islamic culture.

Western culture accept it and they are now even allowed to marry.

clown fish,it mention in the article about "gay muslim" i thought this is not allowed in the Muslim.

Dear this is not allowed in any religion, infect few years back it was not even accepted in the society where due to some reasons that i don't wanted to discuss here is now allowed, and where the term came from "Gay Muslim" have some one said "gay christian" or "gay Jewish" or "gay Hindus"??? those who are gays goes straight against the nature, they have no religion..............so its better to call them "gay" simply

religious website and forum. There are plenty of them in operation already hence it's not really a new concept. Personally I am not really a "facebook" person anymore but I know plenty of my friends are very much apart of both FB and FB type religious websites as well. In fact some of them are actually founders(is that the right term?) of similar websites/blogs too.I on the other hand prefer to only browse authentic Islamic websites to gain knowledge but stay away from debates and arguments. All in all to each their own. The cyberworld is indeed as vast as the world itself!

I suppose as with with Facebook, there will be filters and moderators.

I cannot see it being a success, but I do see it as offering a medium to a group with similar interests.
