Labour camp blaze victims still awaiting employers’ assistance

Published: Wednesday, 30 April, 2008, 01:42 AM Doha Time

Staff Reporter
A LARGE number of workers of the two companies of a same group, displaced
by Sunday’s fire at a labour camp near vegetable market are still continuing their endless wait for the employers’ assistance to put them back on rails.
Informing this to Gulf Times, some workers said while the company had moved a number of workers to another accommodation on Street 37 of the Industrial Area, many workers felt that they were left behind in the gutted camp to fend for themselves. The company has hired the new place to house nearly 200 of the displaced workers.
While acknowledging the assistance the employers provided to their colleagues, who were moved to the Industrial Area camp, some workers however said they were still to receive any meaningful assistance until yesterday.
“It was true that we were given food by our employers twice since the fire broke out, but that was all what we could get until now,” said an Indian worker.
However, he said some Indian community forums approached them with promises of assistance. The worker also claimed he had lost as much as QR3,500 in cash and much of his belongings, in the portacabin where he stayed. The worker also pointed out that a number of his colleagues lost the money that they were planning to send home in the coming days.
Meanwhile, inquiries
made from among some workers found the management had informed them
that as in any other similar case, it would take a few more days to get
things back to normal and they need not be worried about the assistance.
