Keeping an eye out to do a little good

If you are so inclined, it is nice sometimes to pop a few bits of fruit in your car, or a couple of bottles of water, and offer them to the workers by the side of the road during the 12.00 til 3.00 break, when many of the construction workers are lying there having their 'relax' time (in 48 degree heat) between shifts.
You can also get rid of your old shoes (sorry ladies, not you, unless they are trainers) and T shirts the same way. Even sunglasses and hats are welcome.

I know we won't clothe or feed everyone, "but every little helps said the old lady, as she peed on the rhubarb".

OK Colt. Keep spreading the word, because we need a good support group to be able to get this off the ground. Once its in motion, we won't have too much problem, and we seem to have a good gathering taking place anyway.

I need someone to co-ordinate all this interest and willingness. I'm useless at that kind of thing.

B.T W. Do you pay us 5000 per gig? yea!!

We have to meet - that's first on the agenda. My house is in West Bay, fairly easy to get to regarding directions.

We have some folks here on QL who are good at organising and delegating, I can tell that from their posts. This is a good opportunity for QL in general to play its part too, I'm sure any forum has to contribute more than just words to any social setting, and this is our way.

So lets know the following with regard to AN EVENT!!!

1: How many musician's do we have out there willing to literally 'play' their part for free. Forming a band, or setting the scene with DJ+ sound system. I know there are a lot of talented folks, so would be nice to get some live music if poss.

2: Who is good at collating info and getting messages out to all and sundry?

3: We need folks to contribute to prizes etc., to encourage folks to part with their money... this should be at corporate level donations, such as airplane tickets, hampers, vouchers etc etc.

4: Someone to find slots in the local hotels/resorts for the venue, possibly with a huge discount or even free usage for one night?

5: Media savvy people with communication skills.

6: Legal savvy people to keep us on the right track.

Go for it folks.

Yeh maybe your ID gives you off as a Qatari... hell who cares, the reasone I asked was coz then I wud tell you to start getting off our LandCruiser or Beemer or Merc or RR etc. (not to say that you can't drive any of those otherwise :-P) and start putting into practise what we're talking here... lol!!!

But hey, Qatari, Indian, British, American, Spanish, Egyptian, Jordanian, Sri Lankan, Aussie, Nepali, Paki, African, German, Polish, Kiwi, Finish, (phew... running outta breath) who cares... I say we shed all that... we're QLers now... YAY!!!

Huh? i'm not being sarcastic hun... I am really willing to take time off and assist you guys in raising some money or clothes or food or watever it takes to get some of it out to the guys toiling in the sun.

Like AW suggested, a QL Charity Ball is one way of doing it, but how far that goes is left to be seen. That is a good way to raise money though.

Talk about swaping places... damn, I don't think i will even last a half hour doing what those guys do... I will suffer from heat stroke or sumthing like that.

don't be sarcastic...

but.. following your mood...Colt, you can exchange work places with these guys for 1 day … bring one of them to your office, let him faffing away on QL, while you are performing his duties..and I'll bring you bread and water (and even music if you wish) while you're having your rest under the tree in the afternoon…who about it?

Angelwings, Please count me in! I have been waiting for an opportunity like this since I came to Doha 4 months ago. Charity events is a fantastic idea. I'm sure there are more people out there who are willing to help. It would be great if we could split into small groups (week days and weekends) of 2-3 people and give away food, drinks, clothes etc. Please let me know when you will start. I work from 8-4:30 so don't mind doing it on week ends. Being part of this will make me SO happy.

I'd love to get a QatarLiving charity drive thing going. Perhaps even a QatarLiving Ball / Night of a Thousand !!... etc etc etc. Great way to get together and with a 'purpose' too !

I have loads of ideas for that kind of thing..., I create stuff for events like this, so no big deal, and a great way to bolster the funds to pay for some of this kind of help for the labourers.

What do you think? Anyone else interested?

I'm laughing out loud here!!! I hadn't read this since writing it, so I'm amazed at the response. Its fabulous - thanks everyone.

I talked to a small group of folks the other day, and said I'd love to deliver a few boxes of apples or oranges to some of the construction sites, perhaps hand out to the men waiting in the queues for the buses, or as I suggested earlier, just to the ones lying by the side of the road. They said they would love to be part of that. Perhaps some more of you would be interested in that kind of thing.

I have more ideas, but I'll wait for your feedback on that one.

Keep going you wonderful folks... and the Starfish thing !! Brilliant and very apt.

What a great idea angel wings! Yes, it's small acts of kindness like these that go a long way. As Jesus said; "Whatsoever you do to these the least of my brothers, that you do unto me". You are truly an inspiration, angel wings.

God bless you.

A 2X4 metres room housing 11 labours used as dining, living, sleeping doesn't have much for the storage.

Most cases they do not take apparels due to the storage constraints. Food, water, edibles are always appreciated, however.

I would love to be a part of this... I can make little food bags if someone is willing to drive as I work 8-4/5days. This is such a great idea. My fiance always does this back home... I don't know why I didn't think of it here.

As much of a duche bag that I may be, I think what you have said in there makes so much sense and I will certainly do that.

Infact maybe we should all put up something like that and get together and do a charity drive or sumthing like that and then go out and distribute them... all a part of Qatar Living...

Let's make a difference to at least some...

The Starfish Story

(adapted from The Star Thrower, by Loren Eiseley, 1907 - 1977)

Once upon a time, there was a wise man who used to go to the ocean to do his writing. He had a habit of walking on the beach before he began his work.

One day, as he was walking along the shore, he looked down the beach and saw a human figure moving like a dancer. He smiled to himself at the thought of someone who would dance to the day, and so, he walked faster to catch up.

As he got closer, he noticed that the figure was that of a young man, and that what he was doing was not dancing at all. The young man was reaching down to the shore, picking up small objects, and throwing them into the ocean.

He came closer still and called out "Good morning! May I ask what it is that you are doing?"

The young man paused, looked up, and replied "Throwing starfish into the ocean."

"I must ask, then, why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?" asked the somewhat startled wise man.

To this, the young man replied, "The sun is up and the tide is going out. If I don't throw them in, they'll die."

Upon hearing this, the wise man commented, "But, young man, do you not realize that there are miles and miles of beach and there are starfish all along every mile? You can't possibly make a difference!"

At this, the young man bent down, picked up yet another starfish, and threw it into the ocean. As it met the water, he said, "I made a difference to that one!"
