Justice to be hidden

What concerns me is the man who took this video was arrested. If he had not taken and shared it the government official would have got away with assaulting this man. They have arrested him because he has embarrassed the police force and the government, they would rather such incidents remain hidden.

No justice for Asian men in Dubai.

------------

UAE arrests man for sharing road attack video

YouTube video showing man attacking a van driver with his agal - the rope used to keep the traditional Arab head dress in place.

Police in Dubai have arrested a man who filmed an incident in which a United Arab Emirates government official attacked an Indian van driver.

The man has been arrested for sharing footage of a crime, after his video was posted on YouTube and went viral, prompting anger both inside and outside the country.

The official who carried out the attack has also been arrested.

The victim of the assault has not filed a complaint.

The Dubai police force explained on its Twitter feed that the man who filmed the attack was arrested "because he shared it".

"If a crime was video recorded, the recorded material has to go privately to the police and not shared over internet," another tweet read.

The clip shows the official angrily taking off his agal - the rope used to keep the traditional Arab head dress in place - and repeatedly hitting the driver with it.

The official is also seen punching the driver.

Police have quoted the attacker as saying that the van driver had clipped his four-wheel drive vehicle and drove off, adding that he was verbally abusive when eventually stopped.

Many people in the UAE have denounced the attacker's actions as shameful, especially during the holy month of Ramadan.

"The overwhelming clamour for the attacker to be brought to justice shows that no-one is too important to avoid being brought to account," said The National, a government-owned English daily newspaper, in an editorial.

However, the police and public prosecutor have stressed that everyone in the country is equal before the law.

According to the UAE's penal code, if convicted of assault, the attacker could be jailed for up to one year and fined 10,000 dirham (£1,795).

The UAE has taken steps to improve conditions for foreign labourers, who are mostly from South Asian countries, after repeatedly coming under fire by rights groups in recent years.

Robin Hood was a thief, all this man did was video a serious crime taking place.

Mind your own business, that's crap

First they came for the Jews and I said nothing as it was not my business.

Then they came for the Arabs and said nothing

Then they came for the blacks and I said nothing.

When they came for me, there was no one to speak up

Brit I think there is a difference in randomly filming people which is an invasion of privacy and documenting evidence of a crime taking place

Well said..

Maybe the guy will get a Ramadan pardon

By Rip Cord• 26 Jul 2013 10:53

Well I disagree with you magik, arresting the man who took the video will prevent other people going to the police with evidence. It means you can beat Indians and other Asians without having to worry about being caught!

By magik• 26 Jul 2013 03:43
magik

I have seen this happen multiple times where someone has been beaten with the agaal, first of all its horrible and secondly in Raamadan...that is a shame an definitely not a good representation of how you should act during the holy month or any time at all. This is sad..although the person recorded it went to jail im sure he is somewhat still glad he took the video and posted it and will help with future incidents like this insha allah.

Have they released the video grapher yet like they did the Norwegian woman, or maybe he is still locked up because his colour codes happen to be brown. If it was not for this guy then the official would have certainly got away with his crime and god alone knows how many times he has done the same things to others before he got caught on camera this time

By britexpat• 22 Jul 2013 12:10
britexpat

The whole point of sharing the video was to bring attention to the case. - rightly so.

The police need to use their brains a little more and use the evidence to convict the culprit.

Ofcourse, since the victim is afraid to file a complaint, he may get away with it.

the story of Norwegian lady as granted as it is very ambiguous. My friend was in relationship with a Polish Girl. After six months of relationship when it did not workout, he broke up but she just turned up & started blackmailing him that she will report to police that he raped her and bla bla bla.

16 months jail is not accurate for pre-marital relationship. However I strongly condemn the stupid inhumane act of the Emirati. I would not say "Justice is Served" until the Indian is allowed to hit the Emirati in the same road, with the same intensity at same Hours with usual public around.

Arresting the camera man is something very folly. It depends on title he used.

Expecting an poor Asian van driver to file a complaint??? And then an educated well to do Norwegian woman gets raped and when she tries to file a complaint lands herself in jail.

How much is an individuals self respect actually respected??? Disconnect from the realities....

"The victim of the assault has not filed a complaint."

Why? Has he not got some self respect or decency for himself? I would have filed whether someone else filmed it or not. Now knowing that someone else tried to expose these vile conduct to the world, I would go back to the Police.(May be he got some money and bartered his decency for the Dhms)

Not being racist, many times I've been on the verge of stopping my car in the middle of the road and getting out and beat some South Asians drivers. They are such a pain in the a*rse on the roads. May be he annoyed the Emirati guy to such extent that the guy got pi*ssed off and did what he did. That's called road rage. You just cannot control it.

I have never understood the logic behind arresting a woman whose modesty has been outraged by someone. Also I don't understand the logic behind not allowing lone female complainant lodge an FIR. Are these just rumors or is it really true in Qatar too?

Instead of arresting the man filming a crime, they should give him a f**king medal for doing a good public service. If you cannot trust government officials not to attack the general population who can you trust.

Zafirah, I don't have any info about the suspected rapists. Only have the info from the newspaper. It's also bad how TheOne/AlMana Partners fired her because she was raped.

Suli, if the man had just gone to the police and made a complaint do you think the UAE govt official would have been arrested?

Was should filing a crime be a crime? It's not as if he went into his house to film him, he was assulting someone in public!

By Sulieman• 19 Jul 2013 14:05

What happened to the Indian guy is not fair

what the Emarati guy did was not human, and barbarian

what the man (who took the video) did was illegal

So that's it, we to try to protect someone who is not looking for his own justice ?!

Looks like now they want to harass and trouble the good guy for exposing the bad guy who was beating the poor and helpless driver. Where were his family members when this senior official with his fancy and expensive car was thrashing the poor Asian victim. He must have done it so many times to others and got away with it till he got caught on camera this time

By Rip Cord• 19 Jul 2013 13:54

That's right HPL, 'excuse me sir, can I film you abusing that Asian worker'

'No problem, please get my best side'

Some comments literally make me ROFL....take permission from the person one wants to film in such a case... obviously the person would stop half way, give permission in writing (else how does both prove it later) pose for the video and then go on with the assault. Sounds alright, No.

RIP: My friend was summoned to the capital's security department , cuz he shared a pic of a worm he found in his sandwich.

Under UAE law, the minor assault charge could earn the official one year in jail and a maximum fine of Dirham 10,000.

Recording without permission and defaming a person can result in a two-year sentence and Dirham 20,000 if convicted, while abusing the privacy of a person and taking pictures or video without permission and putting it on the Internet can result in a six-month jail term.

By Good old joe• 19 Jul 2013 13:17

Well the person who posted the video must have noticed this things happening so many times over and over again to helpless foreign workers and this time he wanted the whole world to know how good and shining the life in Dubai really is

By stealth• 19 Jul 2013 13:08

Well if you take a photo or video without the permission of the person whom you intend to take, it is a crime.

Sadly I've seen this in Qatar twice. Once by a Qatari and once by another Arab national. Both times I intervened by was told they deserve it. Luckily I didn't go to the police or they would have arrested me!

I've now seen this story on Arabian Business, Al Jazeera and all over Facebook.

If it was the intention of the emirati police to cover this up, they have failed miserably.
