Joining a Gym

Can anyone assist me in joining a gym? I have just arrived and have been told by friends thatÂ it is very difficult to get into the hotels leisure clubs and I may be better joining somewhere like Golds Gym. I have been offered membership of the Sheraton but am not sure if there is a better alternative.

any advice is appreciated.
