Jaidah photo contest rant
http://www.gulf-times.com/site/topics/article.asp?cu_no=2&item_no=497674...
I didn't win :( But how can a photography competition entitled "Reflections" be won by a photo that doesn't have a single reflection in it? If the competition had been titled "Shadows" I would have submitted a different image.
There were some great images submitted in this competition that actually had reflections in them. But I was a bit concerned when I noticed there were a number of entries (that were excellent photo's) that simply didn't have a reflection in them. If it was an open competition why was it named "Reflections"?
This is not sour grapes. There were some cracking shots in this competition of reflections that I acknowledge were better than mine. And I would be saying nothing right now if any one of the shots containing a reflection had won.
Rant over ;)
I like your pic much better TB. The photo that won could have been taken anywhere...does not "reflect" Qatar at all...even if that was not a requirement, I think it should have been considered. But hey, I am not one of the judges :(
Ridiculous.
They said that the meaning could be taken literally or however one interprets it. What a cop out. Show us your pic timebandit!
Here's the info: http://jaidahphotoaward.com/home.html
reflection: [ri-flek-shuhn]
Part of Speech: noun
Definition: thought, thinking
Synonyms: absorption, brainwork, cerebration, cogitation, consideration, contemplation, deliberation, idea, imagination, impression, meditation, musing, observation, opinion, pensiveness, pondering, rumination, speculation, study, view
When it comes to art: photography, painting, music, and the like the word itself may mean differently.
Like I said, I havent seen all the entries, but I know a couple of people who joined the contest who are talented and great photographers in their own rights...so 1 out of 500 entries...and one will say its biased???
I cant help but smile. :)
depends on what reflections meant????
couldnt the results have been influenced???
and from what I know, there are entries from professional photographers from Qatar, Lebanon, Iraq, and other GCC countries.
I havent read the Rules and Regulations of the contest and I really dont know what the contest organizers wanted to see in the entries when they said "Reflections". It may be taken figuratively or methaporically (or whatever you want to take it).
I believe I knew at least half of the judges and I know their calibre and how professional they are. I worked with a few of them in our event last weekend, the EO Majlis...
My point is, they are fair people and expert in their craft...your rant is a rant and just a rant. But Just hope this topic and the QLers wont turn nasty about this topic.
"The runner-up received a voucher for QR15,000 to be redeemed in the photography department of Salam Studio and Stores, the main sponsor of the contest." So the "donation" from the sponsor goes back to the sponsor. Hahaha.
Maybe you might have won if you had photograhed the mirror reflection of a particular unnamed car salesman at the Jaidah overpass showroom, and titled it "Idiot" or "Incompetent Fool".
Agree with your post, though. It's like an art show titled "Water" and the winner's pic is of a building.
I gave it a try..but was not good enough..

Yes, seems unfair as you describe it. Hopefully the organizers will take note.
And agree with you wholeheartedly. Qadar Allah, too bad you didn't win. But surely the winning pic is not keeping with the theme and not that great either. Even my hubby, who knows quite a bit about photography agreed yours was certainly among the best. Oh well!
And WB to QL Timebandit!
that could be a reflection off a dirty shop window pane :o)
